Hi guys, i just found an Opty 185 2.6ghz dual core cpu with the Venus core for a very good price. As it's the same speed as an FX60 i figure it's the same but with a locked multi. How do these things clock?

The reason i ask is because i want to upgrade to a 8800GTX but my 4000+ is going to hold that back. I could upgrade to C2D but that means new everything and i would'nt be able to afford the new 8800 then. This way i get to keep my current ram, excellent mobo etc. Then if i need to in a year or so i can upgrade the rest then. By then Intel will be on the 45nm process as well. Everything is watercooled and this motherboard has millions of clocking options so hopefully i should hit at least 3gig.

What do you think?

Well if its from the UK Then i know where your getting it from & its a Denmark really.
This is mine that i got Thursday
CCBBE 0613RPMW.

That's pretty damn good. Have you still got the X1900 crossfire cards as in your profile? If so what are you getting in benchies or more importantly, games?

WOW 3 GHz undervolted (1.28V)? It also runs at very low temps. Are water cooled?

Yes water cooled but the temps are not as good as they would be if i had my tube of AS5 to hand, but was in a hurry so used some zalman Thermal Grease that is not as good.

I will remove the IHS and use AS5 for better temps.

The only reason to get the 185 is because of the x13 mutli and you'd only need this if your mobo couldn't hit a HTT of 230 and you'd probably have the worst board ever if it couldn't do that! You could probablt save yourself a few quid and get a 165/170/175 and have a look here for the good steppings: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=96900

That's all very well and good but ordering on line you can't pick your steppings and you might get a bad clocker. Everyone was going on about how the 4000+ Sandy's clock. I go and get one and the damn thing only goes to 2.8ghz. It's definately the cpu as i ruled out everything else. Even to hit 2.8 it needs 1.55v. At least if i get a 185 and it's a bad clocker i have got a better stock speed to fall back on. It should at least hit 2.8 anyway.

The motherboard is not a problem as it has more options than you can shake a stick at. It should have anyway as it's a top end 939 board. Max HTT is 400 if i remember rightly.

Final8y, how are you getting on with that 185? Have you had any games running yet?

Depends where you're looking, I got mine from a well known auction site and they guy told me the exact stepping before I bought it ;) £200 is pricey for a 185 is pricey imo.

Cheaper than a whole new rig though. I should be able to get 70 quid for my retail 4000+ at auction, based on prices they have been going for. Take that into account and it will only cost me £130 delivered. That was also the cheapest i could find them on the internet. I found 7 retailers with them in stock ranging from £198.99 to £215.87 delivered. One had them showing as a pre-order for £470.81    .

An auction site was the first place i looked but there are none there.

The thing is you have to pay whatever the price is. There is nowhere (that i can find anyway) that sells them cheaper. I can't keep this 4000+ to go with a 8800gtx as it will seriously bottleneck it. I am not going to go with the likes of a 165 as knowing my luck i will get yet another useless clocker and get stuck with a low clock speed again. At least with the 185 i have got 2.6ghz to fall back on. It should at least run at 2.8ghz, but hopefully 3ghz. I have a very good motherboard and memory which just needs a decent cpu.
