The Accused starring Jodie Foster springs to mind. I take it this is for some sort of coursework or something?!

Nah im in amnesty soc at uni. we are showing a film to raise awareness about the issue

thanks a lot

PS - a non gruesome one would be ideal here

Kids.

Although that's a bit different :p Still a good movie.

Show it in Amnesty Soc though, will go down a treat.

I know, but it's got some under age sex scenes and a lot of swearing and drug taking. Might not bother a lot of people but some might find it offensive.

I'm just giving a warning that's all, if they can watch it then great.

I kind of meant it as a joke really :p Seeing as I bet a lot of people would be pretty offended if it was shown. (Might hurt their precious sensibilities).

There is a film with Way Winstone and Cathy Burke (of Harry Enfield fame) called 'Nil By Mouth'. That has domestic violence and alcohol/drug abuse as a recurring theme, quite upsetting and an insane amount of bad language but the film does end quite well in that the main character played by Ray Winstone realises the error of his ways and how much of an influence his dad was on him.

that seems to fit the bill quite well,

Have you personally seen the film. How appropriate do you think it is considering its gonna be shown to raise awareness and to a generally 18-20 uni audience ?

once were warriors is very violent from what i remember. i don't think the violence agaisnt women - which includes rape, is too graphic though. trouble is my memory is not too hot. i watched it along time ago and i am no good at remembering films. but i do remember it being very, very good. maybe watch it for yourself first? sorry for being so vague..... :o

as for raising awareness - it will definitely do that. even though it's set amongst people of a different culture on the other side of the world, the themes are fairly universal - i think. :p

Once were warriors is a great film, I must have seen it a good 6 or 7 times. It has some classic moments and is quite quotable, like most good films from down under.
It's probably a little too different culture wise for what your looking for to be honest. I'd deffo rent it first. Nil by Mouth is meant to be pretty hardcore i've heard.

Nil By Mouth

What did you think of it dmpoole? I was pretty disturbed when he attacked his own wife. It got me really angry tbh. It had a good message behind it, this bloke was the product of the way his dad had treated him and the way he'd seen his dad act.

I thought it was excellent and the best film that could be shown by the OP.
