I did this yesterday as part of a stag do and it was immense fun and looked ***** cool. Much better than the air rifle/pistols we also shot. Now been looking around and you don't need a license and just sensible rules like not in public.

Does anyone shoot crossbows? If so do you go to a range or are you lucky and have a big garden.

I shoot recurve (though keep thinking about getting a compound) and would not recommend using a crossbow in a garden. They have more than enough power to go through a fence and do serious damage to whomever is on the other side! I would check the local archer clubs and see if any do crossbow, but it is far from common as they tend to do considerable damage to the targets.

used to have a few as well as a longbow when i were a teen, great fun. There used to be a few of us would go up the woods and shoot at various ****.

fond memories of shooting fridges for some reason

Yeah I was surprised by the damage. Would need a massive garden or a substantial stooping wall.
Don't suppose you know of any range in Bristol area? Or what too look out for? Also what sort of costs are ranges?

I don't know the rules for crossbows but for ordinary target archery you generally need a lot of space, especially with the more powerful bows (and at 250+ fps crossbows normally count in that area too) you are looking at shooting distance plus 100m.

I would have a look for archery clubs in the Bristol area and see if any shoot crossbow. Club fees vary a lot, ours are £80 which includes GNAS membership. Generally you need to do a beginners course so you are covered by insurance which agian vary in price (£30 for 6 weeks for the club I am at).

These things are insane considering you don't need a license for them, no legal limit on power as well I think.

Guy at work in the Projects team has a whole load of them. I make sure I keep on his good side.

I used to own a custom pull longbow built buy a guy who handcrafts them. Amusi Glyn his outfit was located in the heart of Sherwood Forest. Also was a member of an archery club, alas my eyes aren't what they used to be. Would be nice to take it up again though.

After a lot of no helps, finally got pointed in this direction. Doh'
hopefully i'll get an email with good news. why didnt i think off that in the first place, there's always a national club for these things.

Woot, they finally got back to me, got one not far away about 40min drive. Fairly expensive £60 a qarter.

Going on Holliday next week, so when I get back I'll have to go and have a wonder around and a chat.

How do clubs work, do you all stand in a line and fire so many off them go to the targets?

Hi,

I've had a crossbow since last year and have always gone to a families house but would be good to use around people with similar interests. Where is this place 40mins from Bristol?

Thanks Jay
