Has anyone here studied Philosophy at A-Level or beyond? What did you think of the subject in general?

:)

I studied a few modules while taking my Physics degree. In general I felt it was interesting in that you could trace the evolution of an idea and in some cases relate this to current theory. In most cases it was a little pointless however.

I did a Higher in it (A Level equivalent, sort of). I really enjoyed it, though I imagine with the wrong teacher it would be awful.

I had a friend at University who was a Philosophy student. As he was dyslexic he once asked me to proof read his essay. I've never been the same since.

Let's just say you have to be really really interested in the subject if you're going to pursue it.

You can download a few lectures on intro to philosophy from the oxford uni podcasts. I would listen to those and see if you still like what they are talking about.

Isn't studying philosophy one of the requirements for working at Starbucks? They all seem to have degrees in it anyway ;)

one of our social work lecturers said there is one key difference between you and your friends who study philosophy and history...............you will have a real job at the end of 3 years and they will be in starbucks lol

I never studied philosophy in school but I read enough philosophy to have a conversation with a uni philosophy graduate. I much prefer listening to modern day philosophers. ie people that have studied historic philosophy and then give their own philosophy from influences. I find this much more relevant and interesting and often more engaging because they are working from 100s years of philosophy history.

I did an A-Level in it and loved it. It's not directly going to get you employed, but this is A-level, not university. Do what you want...

From my experience of social workers, it is no where near a real job.

I haven't, but in a parallel Universe I have.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Sigh.

You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.

Now no more derailment mmmkay.

Some folk may find that Philosophers are useless, however can you really say that not even one philosopher has changed your life due to their thought out analysis? The answer is simply no.

They are of great benefit for increasing the open mindedness of people, even if only by a little.

Just started reading a couple of books by Bertrand Russell and Simon Blackburn. If you ask me Wikipedia is also a great source for info, personally i'm keeping it as a hobby then maybe later i'll consider going into full-time education.

Have fun.;)

Halfway through my AS level in philosophy and ethics, and it's my favourite subject (I do biology/IT/psychology as well)

Interesting, not sure how useful it'll be though..
