If your area really is that **** then instead of chaining your bike outside then put it in the shed/garage/house.
I doubt most bikes are worth enough to warrant buying security devices for, other than the standard D-Lock.

Mine is, and I might buy one of those. I'll be buying a new bike in another couple of months as my current hybrid has run it's course. Annoyingly they've gone up in price to £900! Kona Dr Dew is the bike.
Might be an idea to get one of those if I take all my stuff out too, as I've got a few grands worth of gear now, and I'm just a hobbyist!

Think I'm pretty careful with my camera bag, so I'm not too worried about it being nicked.
In regards to a bike though, I think the problem is that if it does get nicked, you are probably going to end up tracking it to some huge sprawling estate with no way of even knowing which property it is in. A lot like some of the cases where people have tracked their Apple devices, the Police probably won't have the time, so you are best just going to your insurance company.
