Found a small boxing gym nearby me and I've been very tempted to go, I went in recently just to check times and stuff but unfortunately they dont do mornings which is best for me, only nights.

He mentioned they do some student nights for 3-4quid a pop but a good load turnup (30+) so I figured they wouldn't have the staff to handle this number of people and effectively train them.

Would you avoid the uni lot and see if he does any beginners classes or something?

Feels a bit wasteful money wise if I was paying for that on top of my gym membership and several wee footy games etc. Plus I lack time hideously as in final year

Why would you think that?

More training partners to go around and differing experience levels are a good thing, in my experience.

I do martial arts and I find that training with more experienced students teaches me new things and teaching less experienced students reinforces what I already know.

I have just started and last time there was only 3.

I would imagine with more people, it wouldn't be any worse as you can still train from other trainees.

I boxed amateur for a couple of years. It depends what you want out of it and how serious you are about it, I suspect if you go on a 'student night' and it's packed there will be a lot of people fooling around or giving less than their all, which generally has an effect on you as well in a small gym.
If you genuinely want to give it a go I'd find out when the regular training nights are and then talk to him about joining in on the next one.
I don't have much time atm but I'll check the forums again later if you have any questions.

if your doing it for fitness, then running and skipping is all you need, thats how most boxers do their cardio as well as punching constantly, which you can do whilst running.

if you want to do it to learn how to box, then your better off with some 1 on 1 time and pad work as well as a little bag work with a proper trainer. pad work is much better though, with him going backwards and forwards like a real fighter would in the ring. bag work is pointless unless you know what you are doing and you need the right equipment, a bag which wont move, if it swings wildly, theres a good chance of messing up your wrists.

if you already have a gym and play footy, and your worried about money, then its obvious you dont really need to be doing this for fitness.

Been looking at boxing club, nearest is about 6 miles away, just want to get the technique right and get some power and speed into.

Got a punch bag but its in the back garden and boring doing it on your own soon get bored.

No one punches while they run, it's not all the same as Rocky you know :D
Also, you don't really need one on one time at all to begin with, and most gym coaches won't do this because they usually get lots of people coming in once or twice and then never coming back so it's not worth it for them to pour all their time into you when they have their regular competition boxers to train. Of course they will spend a bit of time on your first time there showing you things but all you're doing at the start is footwork and learning how to punch and move your body properly, that and lots of skipping/ground work, you need to know the basics and be in proper shape before one on one coaching becomes effective.
I could be wrong, all gyms do things differently so the best thing to do is just go and do it!

You're not doing it right then! :D I'd get to that gym and start going to some training sessions as soon as possible, the chances are if you've had no instruction at all all you're doing is forming bad habits and simply doing it wrong.

But to both you and Shicky, just go and do it, it will be amazing, you will love it.
