What is AudioSurf?
Audiosurf is an IGF award-winning puzzle - rhythm hybrid game. Its track-like stages visually mimic the music the player chooses, while the player races across several lanes collecting coloured blocks that appear in sync with the music. Currently, the full version is only available for purchase through Steam and includes the entire Orange Box soundtrack files to play. The concept is simple . . You select a song and it is 'analysed' by the game engine, and a file (containing the dynamics of the sounds and how the track and blocks are arranged) associated to the music is created. The game loads the environment from the file, with the track's elevation, surface and layout reflected in the dynamics of the music being played. For example, if a player were to choose to play a very soft and mellow song, the track would be uphill, very slow, relaxing and rich in cool colours. If a player were to choose a very intense and loud song, the track would be downhill, sped up, thick with traffic and lit up with hot colours.

In a nutshell this game is just absolutely awesome and extremely addictive. You can play whatever type of music you want, and it's superb! A great idea to put some life back into those quality choons!

We'll also be running regular competitions, so get signed up and add your name to the list! Oh yes  :D

Demo/Price
The game only costs $9.95 which is roughly about £6 with tax.You can download a free demo and purchase it from steam. More information here: http://www.steamgames.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=12900

Plenty of videos can be found on you tube, so type in your song of choice and AudioSurf and there will most likely be video of it on youtube.

Here's some Daft Punk in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOfdccaZnBU&NR=1

only seen the quick pop up of it in the steam news, from the one screenie it looks a bit like guitar hero but you're in a car/bike/whatever and just move left or right to hit the notes... i could be completely wrong :p but does look like a fun way to kill time... or drinking games :D

From the vids, it looks more like tetris mixed with guitar hero. you have 3 lanes, and colour blocks come down the lanes, if you hit a bock it adds to your pile for that lane. getting rows of the same colour up a lane or accross the 3 makes them dissapear, getting points.

So more of a puzzle game like tetris really

but the ability to use any of your own music is awsome!

EDIT: its out Friday allong with a demo, so will be getting that then

EDIT 2: oopse, I may have pre ordered it completely by accident! :)

I played the beta, was great fun. Only worry I had was that it didn't run too well on my system. Even only the lowest graphics settings I would still get around 20fps, which made it really unplayable. I'm hoping this issue will have been fixed in the release. The game ran fine on max settings on my friends system which is very similar to mine, and from the forums I found that it was running fine on quite old systems so it really shouldn't have had a problem with mine.

Its by no-means a new idea, Vib Ribbon on the Playstation was an awesome recreation of it (its also incredibly rare, my version is worth about £40 and rising). :D

BUT, it is a great idea and in theory provides the game with millions of millions different levels. Although how different and varied they will be depends how well they've made the game read the tunes.

If its anywhere near as fun as Vib Ribbon I'm getting it. :D

I played with quite a few different songs, and can say that the levels vary greatly, which coupled with the 3 tier difficulty (how many different colours you play with) and the various characters you can play with (each had different abilities) should make for a lot of gameplay.

Edit: the worldwide scoreboard also makes it pretty competitive.

ive played it, its good for a while but gets a bit boring. not really great for slow/quiet songs as u move along at a snails pace.

every level is totaly different as every song is different but i think the novelty of it wears of fast

Unless you listen to music so obscure that no-one else has even "surfed" it? Or do the scoreboards only work for the Orange Box tunes, or what?

The scoreboard in the beta would create a new scoreboard if no one had played the song you just played. Even if you do listen to obscure stuff (i do too) chances are someone else will play that song, in the beta there were scoreboards for songs i wouldn't have expected there to be (Well not at that stage anyway).

According to the site, one of the most played songs is Unknown by Unknown! :)

Yeah I seem to remember seeing that in the beta, not sure how the song identification works (might be ID3 tags) but it didn't have a problem recognising any of my songs.

Yes the novelty can wear off, but that can happen in any game. I agree that slow songs are really boring, also fast songs can get a bit crazy and difficult. Songs with a good variation are best, and if you start competing for scoreboard slots it gets more fun (especially if you know the person your competing against).

WOW
I remember playing the demo of that game non-stop when I was younger. Never bought it though :/

Well I take full credit for introducing Geuben to AudioSurf :D. As such I'm totally biased, I think it's great fun. It's something you can pick up with no skill other than the ability to move the mouse, and the challenge of playing against your favourite music is a nice change. I won't try too much to sell it here because it's so hard to do it justice with a description, but I'd strongly recommend people to at LEAST check out the demo when it becomes available.
