Anyone use a dongle or mobile for pc gaming?

I'm looking for a way to get cheaper internet, so a mobile with tethering or a dongle seams like the way to go but I play a lot of Battlefield 3 and iRacing so I need good speeds. With all the stories of suppliers limiting connection speeds I need to know from fellow gamers how good the speeds really are. I was thinking about signing up to 3 mobiles "the one" plan.

Latency is going to vary. I've seen it as low as 100ms & stable while using the Vodafone network. I wouldn't bother playing FPS, just in case the latency spikes from time to time.

Actually it's fine for games that compensate for a huge range of pings e.g. eve online or rts if you have a constant ping. Fps - not really. Bandwidth is also an issue as the xbox has shifted 41MB down and 30MB up in the past 90 min on servers half the size of pc ones with no one using voip. Mobile is a lot more expensive than fixed line, you'd be better off with talktalk. Look up adsl24 or something similar tbh.

Tough truthfully the best use of a usb dongle is plugged into the router as a backup for the main line :)

Mobile / dongle internet is no good for online gaming, end of story.

Thanks for the concise and well though out response there. Shame it is completely untrue.

I have a couple of mates who are hard core into World of Warcraft, 20 man raid type stuff. They play fine on a 3mobile 3G dongle out in the sticks in Ireland. It also handles borderlands fine.

I am sure if you are twitch gaming on an FPS having a cable broadband ping of 19ms is a huge advantage, but the average ADSL pings I see vary from 60ms to 120ms which is pretty much what my mates get on the 3mobile dongle. Only in really bad weather does the ping suffer to any noticeable degree.

If I were you TrueBrit, I would try to trial one, or grab a pay as you go one to start with to make sure the speeds are acceptable for you.

Edit : As for bandwidth, my mates were fine on 20gb a month playing WoW every day, Youtubing and general surfing. That is including the big patch downloads. I think they used an average of 12gig a month (both of them playing).

Mine works great for online gaming, BF3, BFBC2, COD Black ops, no problems at all on 3 Premium dongle or Tethered Galaxy Note, a lot depends on proximity to mast, but if you're reasonably close and hspa+ signal is available then you should be ok to play online.
