Only just found out these things existed...want to buy one but a couple of questions:

Are you supposed to put it under your bed sheet? Or on top of you under your duvet?

Is it OK to use a double on a single bed? Ie. fold it up in half and use it like that?

Thanks.

How old are you? I am shocked you have never heard of these!

When choosing have a look how long it takes to heat up. We have one which we switch on when going to bed and by the time we have brushed our teeth etc. and got into bed it is warm. Ours also has an automatic off timer in case you fall asleep with it on.

I think it was about 50 quid

had them as kids but the house was so old it had an air raid shelter and an outside loo, i'm only 34 though so it's not like it was a very long time ago.

Under the sheets was best, heat goes upwards after all and never fold them.

Although now, we use hot water bottles. wife has 2 large ones, and a small one for our 4 year old. Fill them, pop them at the top of the bed 20 mins before you get in then move then down to your feet when you get in.

The wife's stays warm until 7 or 8 am from about 11pm, and the little one lasts about 4-5 hours before you don't notice it.

Unless you live in Scotland I don't see the point, the rest of the UK just isn't that cold.

Thick duvet should be more than enough, most nights I wish it was colder, not warmer.

Had one years ago, but can't stand them now. For me, nothing and mean nothing beats a really good duvet. It does need to be a good one though, and they aren't cheap.

I can't say if one can buy the one's that I have in a single (I don't have any single beds), however, those that I do have I got from John Lewis. As far as I recall (been a long time since I bought 'em), they were around £70. They may be a bit dearer now. With these, sorry I can't tell you the name of them, I threw the boxes out long ago, one can have either one side, or both sides on. Both sides function separately.

They have several functions: i.e. you can set them to be on all night, or on a timer, or just manual switch. Every here has stated correctly; with the John Lewis one, and probably all other brands, you can switch it on, go brush your teeth, and find it has warmed the base nicely (yes, they are to go on the mattress). No, they can never be used folded.

I don't believe that I have ever heard of any that go on top of one, under the duvet; doesn't mean to say that one can't buy them tho, just that I don't know of any. They have drawstrings that go under the mattress, sides, top and bottom, and tie up at the side of the bed. Personally, I use the manual turn off/on action for mine, simply because I'm technologically challenged by these things; Heck, I can't even figure out the DVD settings... I always turn mine off when getting into bed, I never sleep with it turned on, not on any setting; altho the instructions and settings do have an all night function.

Everyone is different in their requirements regarding duvet togs. The one I have on my bed is a 5.5 tog, and I find that even too hot during the night. I like to have a window open in the bedroom all winter, day and night. During the course of any one year I tend to have a lot of guests, and as I said everyone has different requirements; so I have duvets ranging up to 10 togs. But I could never sleep with any above the 5.5 tog. I only wish that one could find a 4 tog, but it seems that they are not made; at least I haven't found one yet; tho I haven't given up hope.

I'm sure they must do a single bed size in the John Lewis one, and I can highly recommend them.

I have one, got it on a rainforest lightning sale sept last year I think.

It's a god send. Quick 15mins before I go to bed gets it nice and warm and I fall asleep a lot quicker; I turn it off just prior im off.

I have a heavy duvet too, but my celling’s are 20ft high and I have a pair of single glass sash windows so it’s hard to keep heat (old grade2 building). Couldn’t live without it now.

Yup. Well, the other half uses one. My side isn't even plugged in. Advantage is, she doesn't encroach on my side of the bed if I'm late to bed. ;) Just steals all the duvet instead...

Under the sheet.

No. Really bad idea. Doubling up on the heating elements.

Welcome.
