Hi all do any of you use dd-wrt I do and I have it running on my Linksys wrt54gs v6 using the v24 micro generic version just wanting to know should I use this version or v23sp2 also what version have you got running and also what routers do you use it on.

Thanks

I'm still on v23 SP2 and I've had great luck with it. If I change anything I think I'll switch to Tomato since I think Brainslayer has lost some of his focus.

The problem I had was I couldn’t get a wan ip address I had to clone the mac from underneath the router did you guys have to do that or did I install it wrong?

Never had a problem getting a WAN IP on either DD-WRT (v23 or v24) or Tomato. I prefer Tomato overall, but DD-WRT has some nice features :)

I don't run stock Tomato btw guys. I run Victek's mod which is the latest Tomato with some added tweaks to Contrack and the hash tables etc to stop torrents crapping out the router (too many connections etc). Works like a charm and I can browse the web perfectly even with torrents running at 2.2 MB/sec in the background :D

What is this in the router TX Power its currently on 70 but It can be changed up to 251 can I put it up or will it kill my router, also I have found this which is on 200 MHz overclocking frequency and this can go up to 250 MHz.

Hope to hear some replies

Cheers

Claimed! :p Welcome to OcUK... Got my very own tea monkey now hehe

The transmit power is the strength the router sends out the wifi signal. Default is actually 42 iirc, and plenty strong enough (UK standard is closer to 28). Anything much above 78 will shorten the life of the router's components and even potentially be a health risk at full whack

The overclocking for the CPU isn't something you need to bother with, and again much over 216mhz will shorten the life of the unit.

Rainmaker - so what routers do you have and which models and along with which versions as you know i have an linksys wrt54gs v6 with the micro dd wrt on it

I'm running a WRT54GL v1.1 (latest release) with Victek's Tomato mod v1.19.8850. I used to run DD-WRT v23 then v24 (VOIP release) but prefer Tomato.

You can find Victek's Tomato mod HERE. Note that it's half Portugese half English, like this:

"Portugese stuff I haven't the slightest idea how to pronounce / English translation at the end of the paragraph."

Don't do what some other guy did and say "Have you got a link in English?" :p It's much better than the stock Tomato imho, and has some nifty improvements. Give it a go. Just remember to do a full NVRAM erase after upgrade and BEFORE you try to use it. You also can't back up your settings and restore them (it'll restore but will mess your router up) so make sure you write down any important settings like usernames, DNS, whatever beforehand.

You can then manually set up the new firmware by typing in the settings as required. It really doesn't take long (about 2 minutes including adding access restrictions and port forwards etc, once you know what you're doing).

Don't think it will be a health risk! It is only a small fraction of a watt even at max strength.

More power doesn't necessarily mean a better signal to noise ratio; more power also tends to produce more noise in the amplifier circuit of the router, and may actually decrease throughput. Also keep in mind that the client devices (laptops etc.) have a fixed legal output and therefore by the time you get far away enough for the router -> laptop signal to die your laptop -> router signal probably died a while ago.

Its also good to be considerate to your neighbours who may also be trying to run wireless networks, no one wants a wireless power arms race :)

I think this setting is useful primarily when your running point to point links (Pringle can antennas!) and need to fine tune the power output on both routers.

Ok... well TX power I wouldnt increase to more than 120... purely due to the fact that it wont make much more of a difference... I would increase it to 120 and then lower it until you are happy... I have mine at 100 and I get full signal in my entire house now :D

As for overclocking it... (lmfao I knew you would love this)... It didnt make any/much of a difference to me... but I did notice that my router started to freeze... So I had to drop it back down to 200mhz... but I'd try it... I've heard that for other users it has worked perfectly.

What is the exactly version of your router btw?

I use about 35 on the TX power, too much and my WRT54G starts to get hot and the wireless gets worse.

I noticed since flashing with DD-WRT the Cisco Systems orange light is always on can this not been turned off like in the linksys firmware you could turn it off i just cant seem to find an option in the DD-WRT firmware were u can switch it off i hope someone can help also the antennas that come with the linksys wrt54gs v6 what are they are they 2db?

cheers

belnea check out the DD-WRT forum and wiki (on their website). There'll be a script you can add to set the light how you want it... Orange, white, flashes orange when the wifi works, whatever you like.

Tomato however already has light control built into the GUI. Did you try Victek's tomato mod yet?
