In the past i've always used my ISP's usenet server, but i'm looking for more. Does anyone have any experience with newsdemon? I hear giganews is the best, but it's $25 a month, and I don't really want to spend anymore than £10 a month, less if possible. Unlimited downloads are needed as well.

I've been using them for a while now and have no complaints whatsoever, very reliable and if I've ever had a problem, their support are very, very quick and helpful.:)

Are the speeds good? Granted I only have a 5.5MB line, but am I likely to max out my connection?

Hi,

I use NewsDemon and they're excellent. You can get 20% off monthly payments by using the voucher code "retailmenot" when signing up or changing payment method.

Can i ask do newsdemon offer SSL?.

I use Giganews personally myself and although its £15 a month i am happy with the retention, speed, unlimited downloads and of course the SSL certificate. Just wish virgin didnt throttle my bandwidth in the evening :(

Using giganews here, but that's also because with giganews you get newsleecher & supersearch free, whilst you subscribe to giganews. Retention is great also. I downloaded an item that was 208days old yesterday. It's probably longer but I've only been on giganews for a month (used to use thundernews).

I use newsdemon and im on the 20connections SSL thing.

Sign up for an account using a debit card, cancel it and wait for the email offering 10% for lifetime! I did this and upgraded my account to the above.

Only problem I have is getting the SSL server to work? :/ Never does for me although the europeon one is good.

They do offer SSL mate.:)

Not being in the know, what benefit does SSL offer? I know it's secure, but how much more... ie. it just stops your ISP snooping?

Problem is, if I took out the SSL package (though I know I could turn it off) it would just be hassle when using the uni network as I doubt it would be supported, whereas port 23 (for d/ling & supersearch) is unblocked so can use the full speed of the network.

It stops people sniffing your traffic and can help prevent shaping.

You dont need to enable anything for ssl do you? Basically use their ssl server with your username/pw and thats it? I can never get it to connect, constant time outs!

In newsleecher (and a few others I've used) there's generally a tick box. In newsleecher under server nickname, there's a tickbox called encrypted server connection (SSL) that should be ticked.

Currently using grabit because the interface is so simple but it appears that does not support ssl! I will take a look at newsleecher thanks :)

btw without hijacking thread, I would highly recommend newsdemon.

I like newsleecher because you need nothing else. Search works perfectly (or so I've experienced) , it has repair & extract built in, so whilst downloading it will verify your files and once downloaded will automatically repair (if needed) and extract your files. So you only ever have to click download!

I used to use autounpack & a site that isn't allowed before the likes of newsleecher

I've been using newsdemon for a long time now, I found giganews too expensive. Newsdemon has been great, coupled with newsleecher I can't complain one bit.
