Anyone use VOX amps? Opinions?

Hi all,

I'm in need of a new practise amp / small gigging amp (for when I go round to mates houses, etc) and my current 30w amp is sadly about to die. :( It's really old and I've never heard of the make... "Gorilla"?! But anywho, I have a decent Peavy 2x12" Speaker Amp for proper performance use, so I'm after something easy to carry and in the 30w range.

Now the Peavy amp has tubes (trans-tube iirc) and it sounds awesome, what are the VOX amps like? In particular the VR30 for roughly £140. It's a little over my budget but there arn't many valve amps around £100 and 30w. I've briefly read that true valve amps give a much better sound. Is this right?

So my questions... :) .... what are VOX like sound wise? I have a GNX2 pedal (one of those big multi-channel, multi-amp mixer ones) so I can choose a lot of unique combo's to put through the amp, so I'm not after a one that has on-board effects if you will. I don't mind the option to fiddle with reverb and the likes.

Any comments, suggestions, opinions on another make, anything is welcome!

Obviously, I'll go and try before I buy but thought I best ask! :D

Cheers!

Vox AD-30, great tone, great little amp. It does have onboard effects but I rarely use them now in preference of a few pedals instead.

Thanks for the replies, and the picture! ;)

But what is this amp? Never heard of them/it? :)

Anymore info. please?

Thaks again!

I think that is the equivelent of the V-amp built into an actual amp. I use a v-amp into a mixer for recording, or practising sometimes, I've never used the v-ampire though. I would imagine it will be good if you want tons of effects and different tones, although a "Proper" amp would be better for it's single tone.

If you want something nice and simple, I used to have an Orange practice amp that had a lovely dirty sound (obviously only one channel though)

best amps ever are:

Peavey 5150's and 5150 Cabs.

Spot the metalhead... :p

They're not called that anymore anyway, iirc. Didn't Peavey rename them for a recent milestone anniversary (can't remember what they're called though)?

And in fact, this is completely off topic, since the 5150s are worth far more than £140, and no one even asked what the 'best amps ever' are. :o

I used to have a 2x12 vox valvetronix and it was a nice little amp. Pretty versatile for anything except metal. Wasn't sturdy enough for gigging though, it broke down on me a few times!!

Quality amps, lovely sound but not versatile enough? Don't get me wrong, I love 'em to bits but.. as DMP says, Marshall all the way baby, Mode Four for me :p

Thanks everyone, hmmm, I think I'll have to go have a listen of them then. My mate has a little Marshall Amp which he uses, and it does give a nice tone. Darn it.... too hard to choose! :p
