This is just an idea i had and wondered if anyone had seen anything done like this before?
so my idea was to mod a large floor standing speaker and install all the internals so that from the front it would look like a minimalist and stylish speaker, one that would normally house a couple of full range speakers so that they could be removed and in there place large fans could be installed and these could be covered with the removable covers which normally protect the speakers as these would also make for good dust filters!

Assuming your speakers are big enough, and you can get good access to them without ruining the look of them, then why not.

The only thing is that surely they are going to look of place anyway, i.e, (going buy you have a full 5.1 AV set-up), you will end up with 2 speakers on the left or right or in the centre...

My thought on something like this was to strip an old amp out and put a HTPC in there...

Nice idea :)

Have to be a decent size speaker, an mATX mobo is ~250mm square.

Presumably all the buttons, drive tray etc. would be on the back.

Go for it

As long as the depth of the speaker is fine - should be a good project.
worth getting a cheapo case to cut down as making the mobo tray and rear panel from scratch is hard.
An old removeable mobo tray would be ideal

ive been looking at something like these . the dimensions are 210x320x900mm (wxdxh)

behind the front removable covers are 4 130mm speakers so could replace them with fans

i would remove the back of the speaker enclosure, source a suitable cheap atx case which would fit the width of the speaker to strip down to its bare essentials, mount the motherboard etc to it and then slide the case in through the back and line it up with front fans accordingly!
thinking an internal layout similar in principal to the lian li tyr pc-x2000
Im actually beginning to get excited by this idea! !!!

Poor 753s ;( Mine are still perfect and I'd cry if something happened to them!

dont worry i wont be butchering a working order speaker as they would be pricey! i'm not after this model in particular just something similar in size, layout and aesthetics! anyone got any suggestions of other possible speaker enclosures?
