i'd go for reason 4 then to start with. you can expand reason with refills to increase the types of sounds.
as you get better/require a more feature filled product i'd progress towards cubase.
also have a play around with fruityloops before making up your mind. some people may prefer it over reason in terms of the user interface.
If you have little or no experience, go for Reason. Its a doddle to pick up and very expandable. Only downside is it doesn't process audio natively, but you can use Rewire to use other audio apps. This could be important if you are going to be recording vocals/live instruments.
Logic is a much bigger learning curve but is much more powerful.
