Anyone used the new SandyBridge Xeons?

so...

Really, how much faster are these than the X3xxx series that preceded it?

I know the clocks are higher, but do they really DESTROY the older Xeon and make the upgrade tempting for Virtualisation?

Cheers.

At work we use a lot of X3440s for the lower end stuff and they are brilliant. We got in an E3-1230 (I think) and it was noticeably faster.

These were in generic benching tools though, not in any server based testing (VMs etc.). The new E3s are also cheaper (at least for us) than the X3400 stuff.
Here is a link for some performance comparisons: http://serverintel.vn/forum/server-...e3-1230-vs-intel-xeon-nahalem-x3440-4418.html

Destroy? Calm down, it's only a CPU ;)

I've got my first E3 box (ML150 G7) on my bench at the moment, though that's going to be an SBS 2011 box.

It'll be a decent CPU for VM test environments but as it's limited to single socket / 32GB (HP list a 16GB max), production VM use is probably limited.

Agree with this, although its a great CPU the RAM limitation isn't going to make it a great choice for loads of VMs.
