Lately I've been debating between getting a 4k monitor vs 4k TV.
Fortunately or not, most TVs start at sizes such as 49".
I've got enough space on my desk and I can have the screen a bit further but I wonder how big is too big, I feel that at 49" I'd be making some awkward angles just to see what in the corner of the screen?

Depends what you use the PC for. If its a games and media machine then why not! but your going to have to sit quite far back!

Personally I'd go for a monitor myself and look to add a tv hooked up to the PC at a later date, but it is a nice problem you have :p

I'm fairly certain that's too big for your standard desk set-up, assuming that's what you have.

I have a 27 inch monitor and a 40 inch TV (so smaller than your proposed one) and the thought of having the TV at that closed distance from my nose doesn't seem right at all. 4K or not.

49" is pretty insane as a PC monitor, 34" ultrawide is about perfect size, I have a 40" TV and looking at it now even the 40" would be quite silly as a PC monitor (mainly the height and looking up) so a 49" would be worse... A 40" ultrawide would be ok but 16:9 is too tall.

40" UHD has the same dpi as a 27" 1080 monitor if I remember correctly so no Windows scaling required. If you've got the space and can push it back enough then that's a good size.

I used one for a few months but sometimes I felt the center was too close and the edges (or maybe the corners more specifically) too far away and if I had 4 windows open in each corner I was looking directly at 4 corners in the middle. So games can look great and there's loads of desktop space but in the end I bought a 21:9 34" which is a good compromise.

49" is probably just about maybe OK. I've got two 24" monitors side by side on my desk so 49" is double the height. You'll have to move your head to see everything on the screen though unless you're sitting right back. I think 40" would be a better size. You can get 40" 4K TVs but you have to hunt for them. Hisense do them.

i use 50" sony bravia when playing gamepad games Darksouls 3 etc.. rigged up to marantz amp and 5.1 DD

also have a acer x34 for all other games!

I use a 40" 4k monitor as my main display and find it the best size for 4k desktop use and gaming.

I also use a 50" plasma and have done for the last 5years for casual gaming at 1080p.

I think 48" 4k is the same PPI as 24" 1080p and 40" is the same PPI as 27" 1440p.

Yeah think your right there but I didn't feel the need for any scaling with the 40" sat a a reasonable distance. Games were great for the most but trying to maintain a minim 60 fps (@UHD) was a struggle at times for the best experience.

you can buy a lot smaller than 49", iirc sony has released a 43" or thereabouts.

i try to avoid gaming and static images on my plasma. PQ is amazing but image retention ruins them.

starting to think lcd's now are the way to go until OLED is cheap and refined.

sorry for hijacking thread but didn't see a point starting a new one.

When I run 1080p through my 43" 4k tv the image in all games goes slightly gray, anyone know why that is or how to fix it?

Just ordered the new 49" HDR Samsung 8000 series 4k tv as a monitor to replace a Panasonic 50" ax802b 4k tv I was using. I get on well with larger than normal screens as I launch games then kick back and play with a pad. It's really good for online shopping too, you can have large text but 4 browsers open and watch the footy in the corner.

I recently upgraded from a 34 inch ultrawide to a 49inch 4k.

For gaming, it is stunning and I would not go back. For general everyday use it is quite difficult when things are in the bottom corners, but overall still gives me more space and even though I have to move my fat head a bit more, I find it worth the sacrifice.

I'm not a pro gamer, so the limitations of 60hz have never bothered me either.

I use my Laptop hooked up to my 48" HDTV but it's in my front room not at a desk. I use Bluetooth Mouse & Keyboard & sit tuther side of the room on my sofa, Set up works perfect.

Think it would be far to big for a desktop set up though.

how far will you be sitting away from the monitor, there will be sweet spot for size against distance. Too big and too close, the edges of the display (your peripheral vision) will be blurred you will be constantly moving your head side to side and up and down.

I really like my current 24" 1080p screen PPI so if 40" 4k provides the same, I'll be aiming for this. My split is going to 80% work, 20% play so I need sharp picture with good enough colours and input lag low enough not to spoil the the 20% play. Can anyone recommend a particular TV model then?
