Anyone using a 8800gtx in vista 64bit?

How's the performance? I'm going from a 1900xtx in XP to a 6550 (heavily overclocked i hope, and then a quad core). I'm getting 4gig of ram too, hence the need for 64bit. I'm a bit worried about performance in games though...now i'm not the kind of person who demands 100+fps or anything, but i'd like too see some speed with my new rig. Would i be shooting myself in the foot by sticking to vista 64?

What about general performance though, apart from gaming.

DiRT and CSS run significantly better on my bros' E6600/2GB DDR2/640MB 8800GTS XP rig than on my rig (in sig). 3dmark is only marginally behind XP, but my (limited sample of games) doesn't bear that out.

I'm banking on things improving.

Yep also running Vista Ultimate 64Bit, seems rock solid, I did have a problem running 4GB memory with Vista 32bit premium, could only run 3 sticks of memory

No problem with the 64Bit version though.

Only play tested Company Of Heros, Counter Strike,
Dark Messiah, Armed Assault.

Performance in Vista64 is good.

Performance in XP is great. Generally speaking, XP is still the man.

Things are slowly creeping up to scratch, but it's taking far too long.

I found performance in vista was absolutely fine ( if a little bit off xp), but stability was absolutely rubbish. Whilst playing games i got errors all over the shop, not too mention whole computer lock ups/freezes. i thought my gfx card had broken but lo and behold i have gone back to xp and now all the same games that were completely unplayable are now working perfectly, havent had a crash yet. ( games were: company of heroes, lost planet, world in conflict beta, graw 2)

I also tried my 7800gtx in vista but, that elimnated some problems but brought with it, some new ones!

Yes, that was on a completely clean install of vista. Be warned, many people don't have problems but you have only got to go on the nzone forums to see the 100's of people who are.

Personally i'm going to wait till the end of the year before going back , hopefully they will have fixed everything by then.

Not on a GTX - but performance for me in Vista is great, most games perform the same if not better in Vista. There are a few exceptions, though - Oblivion runs considerably worse for me in Vista than in XP (Much more stuttering) and STALKER outright crashes after a few minutes of play.

Apart from those two games, which I don't even play anymore, it's great.

Vista is a resource hog and sucks big time, it has one thing over XP and that's DX10 and from what i have seen that sucks to, in terms of performance and the measly extra effects you get with it, they should have called it DX 9.1.
  Vista is superior to XP, it loads my applications faster and currently performs nearly as good in games.

That will be fixed eventually and it's a nVidia issue not Vista, oh and the DX10 sucks because no real games that use it are out there yet.

WiC is in beta and the rest of the DX10 stuff is just crappy patches that aren't optimized or well coded for that matter.

Roll on BioShock.

Not sure where the problem lies. ATi's Vista drivers are second to none. Or is that not the case with the 2900?

Yeah vista is nearly as good as XP in games, did you check the link out? it uses 50% more memory in games than XP, my XP loads apps all most instantly so i see no superiority over XP, in fact its more inferiority.. :p

not bad, but im only getting 14631 in 3dm06 for sli gtx in vista 64..... spec in sig, so i dont know what to make of it, but in terms of playability, there is no problem what so ever, think most major problems have been solved, not much fps behind xp now, maybe 5-20 depending on app.

superior? lol, im sorry but from my experience i can hardly play any games on vista for any length of time before something goes wrong

on xp the same games work perfectly. ok so you maybe lucky and have no problems but its clear vista isnt superior for games, in fact i doubt anyone on this forum would adhere to that.

I've played all the games I play at the moment on XP with 2GB ram and can't say I've noticed anything being more laggy or w/e.

what does saying "drivers" prove, other than my point  ?

The drivers are bad therefore i am unable to play games on vista with my particular system. I never blamed microsoft i just said vista as a whole has been a mess when it comes to games in my experience.

Drivers are nVidias fault though, nothing to do with Vista.

They aren't that bad now either still pretty buggy but performance is getting there.

um the nvidia VISTA drivers are bad making Vista an unworthwhile operating system for nvidia users at the present time. I realise it isnt microsofts fault but that doesnt retract from vista at the moment being not as good for games as xp is. I'm sure and i hope things will change soon, cus i for one really actually liked vista as an operating system, but found myself troublshooting on forums more than actually enjoying gaming pc and actually gaming on it.
