Just moved to Chippenham and before I moved I checked with Be whether or not I could receive their service. I gave them my postcode and was told I could recieve it. Finally got my BT line sorted out yesterday so I went to the Be website to place my order. When I entered my phone number it said I was too far from the exchange. I rang Be and they told me my line was 13 km away from the exchange. As the crow flies the exchange is about 2.5 km away from where I live. I realise you never get a straight line connection but 13 kms??

If anyone from the Chippenham area reads this could you just add your street name so I could check how close it is to mine (I live in Cepen Park North). BT were of no help whatsover when I tried to find out how far away I was from the exchange, I must have been pased to about 7 different people and they all had different answers - I gave up in the end. Are there any sites where I can check my phone line length?

I'm not a happy bunny as I'm having to use dial up, quite a chore when you've been with Be!

If you've just had a line installed (ie. the number to that address is new) then Be won't have any idea how far away it is since BT like to randomly swap things about.

The number i had on my line when i moved into my current flat (retrieved by ringing 17070) was apparently for an address some 20 miles away!

At 2.5km you could probably expect around 14-16meg - that's just a guestimate, it all depends on the quality of the wiring and what route your line takes.

You may find http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ useful, find the exchange checker and put in your postcode, it will tell you how far away you are (or give you the address of the exchange so you can work it out at least)

The BT 17070 test line service used to have a distance report, but they took this away due to every man and his dog abusing it to find out how good their ADSL would be!

The line was already here but the number is a new one.

I've just spoken to BT again and someone else has done a line test for me. He said that my line was 3.72 km away from the exchange give or take a few metres. I've already looked on sam knows and as the crow flies I'm 2 km away from the exchange. Time to ring Be again and see if I can get anyone to speak to who can help me out. Annoyingly I can't access their official forums now that I have cancelled and moved!! I'm sure Brett on there would have been able to offer some advice and help me out.

In the meantime I've placed an order with Entanet so I'll have to wait till I'm connected to see what speed I get. I'll also try the neighbours this week.

What was stopping you from just getting Be and finding out, just because their computer says you're a different distance than you physically are doesn't mean it won't work.

Be wont let me join them, just says I'm too far from the exchange and can't have any of their services.

I spoke to BT Faults and they did a line test and said my line length was 3.6 km from the exchange. They also said that I will be lucky to get 1 Mb broadband? There's got to be something on the line cos the previous owners here were on broadband although it was AOL!

Be are still saying that my line length is 13 km though which is frustrating to say the least. Oh well, more phone calls to robots!
