Hey guys

Recently made the switch from Orange broadband, where my ntlworld email worked fine using the orange smtp server, and gone over to o2, where I've just discovered I can't use their smtp server apparently for anything else other than their email, which is shocking if true :(

I would just stop using my ntlworld account, but it's been my main email for about 5 years now and it will be a nightmare changing everything across to a new email

Any ideas guys?

Any experience with getting o2 to work with other email addresses other than o2's own?

Thanks in advance

Sounds perfectly normal to me and I'm surprised that you could use the Orange SMTP server for your NTL mail. Bit of bad configuration by Orange. You'll just have to bite the bullet and change over completely.

give it a bash on o2, but if it doesn't work, you should still be able to authenticate against the old NTL smtp server with your email account details for authentication.

Fixed it

o2 have 'relay.o2broadband.co.uk' available for just this reason

And ns400r, it wasn't just orange that allowed me to use ntlworld, it has been Tiscali and BT too

No problems here relaying mail for other domains via o2.

Using smtp.o2.co.uk:25 with password authentication (main o2 username and password).

Most ISPs SMTP servers are indifferent to the traffic you send over them, though most require authentication or the connection to come from an IP address registered with that ISP. But as far as outgoing SMTP is concerned few care what accound you're using.
Some ISPs have dedicated servers to maintain performance for customers and separate 3rd party SMTP. Clara.net are another mail provider i know that do this. but it's not that common. More often than not it's incompatabilities in the security settings when migrating the accounts that causes issues.
