Anyone using onboard GPU instead of using separate GPU in SFF?

Wasn't sure which forum to post this, so hopefully the mods will move if necessary - SFF or Graphics Card forum?

In a nutshell, I'm wondering if many have decided to ditch their graphics cards and using onboard GPU to free up PCIe slots in a mATX / mITX SFF setup?

I'm using a silent 2GB GT610 that has a large heatsink which is blocking a PCIeX1 slot that I am thinking of using for another DVB-T2 card. I'm just thinking whether to ditch the graphics card and just use the onboard GPU's HDMI or whether to go back to a slim 1GB Asus GPU that has fan.

I don't think I do anything graphically intensive other than just watching DVDs, Blurays, recording DVB-T2 Freeview HD on occasions and the odd mkv or handbrake encode.

Will there be any issues with temps on the onboard GPU or will it be fine for what I do?

Providing the motherboard supports a graphics output, there no reason in your situation why you would need to use a graphics card. You could then use the space for something else, sound cards or PCIe SSD!

There will be no temp issues :)

You haven't said what the on-board GPU is.

:o Oops sorry! The onboard GPU on the Z77M-D3H is an Intel HD 3000. The max memory I can allocate to it in BIOS is 1GB.

@snips86x: Yes it has onboard HDMI, DVI and VGA but was in two minds after reading varied opinions in forums about video stutter / temps etc. I don't use it for games, only for movies and TV.

Thanks!

Hi,

I built the kids a little in win itx system a little time ago. Had similar issues so decided to go back from a gpu to igpu. Can't say its a problem, just depends on what you need to do. This particular system only really does homework , bit of surfing and YouTube. The hd2000 on there i3 2130 processor does the job fine.
If your needing more demanding things from your PC in the graphics department, then I would think a dedicated gpu would be of benefit.

Regards :)

Unless you plan on gaming I would never put a GPU into an HTPC these days, it just isn't necessary.

I have an HTPC that runs with the IGP on the now ancient i3-530 and I haven't had any problems with blu-ray rips or anything else.

Belated thanks for the responses, have been on gardening duty what with the good weather - forecast of rain Thurs/Fri!

@Baboonanza: That's very reassuring to hear. Will look to take out the GPU this week and see how things go.
