I am looking for a Stab jacket and a set of regs, anyone got any suggestions... Been thinking about Buddy Commando TD jacket... also, I want it either black or very dark - no tropical colours.

I'm looking in Sleepy's direction here...

AP valves is about a few miles from where I live. When I started to dive I had a buddy. Hard wearing as my uncle had used it for years before hand. One of my friends makes them for a living

Have you always used Buddy or do you think there are better?

My uncle used to be the dive instructor/officer at Culdrose. Its all they used in the time I went there and obviously he has seen a fair few jackets. I've only ever had the chance to use buddy so I cant comment on that one. Seen as the military use them though - they must be well proven.

I'm not giving you the url to say buy from there, but whats interesting is that it states they have a first owner lifetime warranty. They must be pretty confident if they offer this. Do any other manufacturers offer this?

That's more expensive than I have seen it elsewhere... I'm going to a dive show soon so will likely get it there...

I've heard about the lifetime warranty - guys at the club I am with have years old jackets that have seen many, many dives yet are absolutely fine.

I just wonder if there are any jackets that have better features etc?

Cleanbluesky arnt you the one that has posted asking about a watch, night vision equipment and a redlight torch.
And now this
Are you planning on become a hit man :p

Yeah I wasn't going on the price, simply that they state it has a lifetime warranty. I don't doubt its expensive there!! What more could you want in a jacket?

got that same jacket! (in tropical ;))

very nice in the water. in our club i'd say about 50% have buddy BCDs

If you off to the show next weekend don't forget to get your kit fitted at the AP stand and get your free mug :)

Are you going for the spare air job? i didn't bother cos i'm tight!

When I started diving AP Valves had 95% of the club market, they were legendary for their toughness. Some people still use the same jacket decades later.

However they were big and bulky and not as comfortable as others so they slowly lost out to the competition. With their attention on their rebreather program they lost their market leader position, they completley missed out on the tech market, only producing a couple of average models late in the game. Their customer service though remained as good as ever.

As for a BC have you considered a wing /backplate combo? A wing provides a better lift profile, is more comfortable to use, does not restrict mobility or chest expansion, packs away in a smaller space, being modular it allows for a better and cheaper upgrade route if you decide to tech up with twins, stages etc. A stab jacket restricts arm movement it restricts access to the chest area it also can if improperly set up and overinflated restrict chest movement which can leed to restricted breathing which can lead to a panic attack/hperventilation which often means death. (Incident pit)

Here's what I mean. Manufacturer's site here Halcyon make excellant products, its owned and run by divers who hold world records in cave diving- they know what they are talking about. My wing has seen almost 10 years of service, dived on many a wreck into which I've squeezed through many a tight hole and it still looks like new.

As for regs, apex. I've got 5 apex first stages and 1 poseidon which I now only use to analyse the mix.

What, pretty confident you won't survive very long after using it so it won't cost them anything? :p

One of them never killed me yet :) Though admittedly I havent been diving in a few years now :(

had my buddy commando (in hi viz yellow) since 98, still works fine, been used in ireland, barbados and along the south coast.

Why TD? last time I checked the TD spec of the commando it meant metal d rings and black instead of colours....

If your going for uber cool, then twin tanks and a nice "wings" config ;)

oh, and when you ask about a good drysuit,

O Three in weymouth, great guys and very good quality compressed neoprene custom suits ;)

Mine leaked, it went back, still leaked upon its return, went back again and they'd fixed it however I had enough so bought a DUI. Others I dived with had the same problem with O3 suits always leaking.

As far as reg's are concerned, I'm a huge fan of Apex...have used various different regs on dive holidays etc, but now I also take my TX 40/50 setup wherever I go.

My jacket is a Seaquest, which probably won't interest you, although after more than 100 logged dives, and careful rinsing after every trip, it looks brand new, utterly spanking.

Cheers sleepy - I didn't realise just how experienced you were - thats some very useful information. I must admit that your option has made me think, although all of the guys at the club use stabs I'll have a word with the guy who is teaching me.

Did you learn with BSAC or PADI, by the way?

Started with BSAC. Gained other quals with IANTD, TDI and GUE

Am I right in assuming that a technichal dive is one whereby a person cannot make a straight ascent, either from mandatory decompression stops or a ceiling to their dive?

What sort of dives have you done?

That's a reasonable definition.

My preference is wrecks, a group of us have for 8 years obtained hydro surveys and dived unknowns off the beaten track in the SE. We've recovered bells, telegraphs (and stands), whistles, sextant, bottles of Laundinum (sp) - Opium, crockey with ships name, silver cutlery, bottles, jars etc and of course lots and lots of portholes. I've also done the more usual club diving Scapa, Plymouth, Swanage, St Kilda, Inner Hebrides, Outer Hebrides, Cornwall (North and South coasts) St Abbs and that great favourite of divers everywhere Stoney.

Abroad I've dived Spain and Italy, Florida, and various islands of the West Indies.

Out of my group I'm the only one who'se not yet been bent. I've almost killed myself 3 times through stupidity. I used to teach club diving, but stopped over 10 years ago, now I only do the occaisonal tech course for friends.
