Was just wondering if anyone have had their hands on the now rather old AMD Athlon 5150 and have a feeling for its performance.. Im about to go pick one up(tomorrow morning) in a tiny slim case with a dc powerbrick and use it as a basic media center/10 player minecraft/misc game server. Is it useable as such?

Yup used 1 in a htpc worked brilliantly. No gpu just that 2 x 2gb 1333mhz ram played everything 1080p no stutters at all.

...thank you for the reply..you made my day with that comment. Managed to find a used 5150 with 4 gigs and a kingston 64gb ssd complete with case and dc brick for 65 pounds.. Now i just have to figure out what OS to use.

Yeh its a good little cpu

I put windows 8.1 on mine and kodi worked brilliant

Yep I've got two systems using the 5150 CPUs myself. One was just used to knock together a PC for NAS purposes but now it runs Windows and Plex/Kodi which both work perfectly well. The CPU handles playback and transcoding for remote devices via Plex absolutely fine.

I haven't tried it for much else but what I have chucked at it has been good, especially considering the crazy low power consumption.

Well i've set it up with Windows 2012 eval edition and its running like a champ..its maxing out my gigabit network for transfers and hosting simple things has been easy...i am very impressed by it considering how inexpensive it is..

Bin runnin 2012r2 on it for 8 months now , paired with a 120gb ocz arc and 8gb of 1333 . Ran my IIS with 6-7 sites ( FTP & HTTP ) team speak 3 , and a small 8 man assetto server on a gigabyte board . Spanking little chip and will over clock on the right board , see it do 2Ghz . For a cheap learning platform for kids it's spanking ... I can't rate it enough for what it is a measly 25w chip , with 4 cores and basic GCN graphics . Pushed mine craft without issues albeit at vastly reduced quality .

so what options do i have media server wise.. preferably something with a client as well.. but not nessessary.. any recommendations?

Tbh i just made it so my files were all networked shared and just ised windows.

Chucked kodi onto it for playing films and streaming.

Also put teamviewer on it so i can remote control it
