Anyone with experience of OpenWRT setup?

Out of boredom more than anything I wanted to try another router. I kept hearing about OpenWRT so I wanted to look into it. I wanted a sort of all in one unit and from looking at availability in the UK something like the Asus TUF-AX4200 or TUF-AX6000 are ideal. The latter having dual 2.5 Gbps ports for the future. It seems like a strong contender.

Installation I think I can manage, it doesn't look too difficult. However actually configuring stuff seems hard. There isn't a sort of "Quick set up wizard" that I can tell for people just looking to do a basic home network. YouTube has been helpful but one thing that is worrying me is setting up PPPoE since most UK ISP will have this. From what I gather the WAN interface will be DHCP by default. After looking about I found stuff like: https://www.reddit.com/r/openwrt/comments/109574o/openwrt_21020_cant_configure_pppoe_wan_with_bt/ and https://forum.openwrt.org/t/bt-fibre-pppoe-internet-settings/17681

Generally I should just click Edit on the wan interface that should populate by default and then just change the protocol to PPPoE with relevant username/password. Seems easy right? That seems to be what most people have done. They got internet and said that's it. However this YouTube video got me curious:

At 1:48 he shows a "Firewall Settings" tab during configuration. I am under the impression that like ok I understand why PPPoE isn't default but surely they don't expect you to know to also assign some firewall rules to the wan interface right? Especially when most stuff I see never mentions anything about that. With every router I've setup it's just been inputting PPPoE credentials, secruing the wifi and generally been ok. Never had to faff about with making and assigning firewalls.

Can anyone give any more insight into this setup specifically based around PPPoE for UK and what I should actually be doing? Should I just abandon the idea? I would like to try but if it means potentially making myself more vulnerable I'd rather not.

Its straightforward to setup up PPPoE. You don't need to mess with the firewall on setup as OpenWRT comes with preconfigured defaults, you just need to assign your WAN interface as a firewall zone which is what I think he's doing in the video.

I partially used the below guide when setting up on a Raspberry Pi. The "Getting Online" section would still be relevant to your case though:

Edit - Like you I was bored one afternoon and I wanted to mess with SQM, I had Pi and USB NIC adapter unused so put it together as a temporary "test". This was in August, I'm still using it now. :)

Thanks. To get some hands on experience I've ordered a 3 pack of OpenWRT compatible Zyxel WSM20 to mess around with. Was trying to figure out how to say no to 3 Wifi 6 routers for under £55!

The real fun will come when I try to mesh them on OpenWRT but will be a cool little holiday thing to try. :D

Sounds like a good little distraction. :)

Openwrt really is great for customisation and the amount of packaged add-ins available is mind boggling, and you can generate your own bespoke build with a button press.

Apart from the forums the docs are comprehensive as well and well worth a glance if you are unsure;

Have fun!
