I have a question.

Is it possible to find out how many houses in a council borough are used as second homes?

Any one any ideas if this is possible?

Do you mean council houses that are used as the tenants second home? There should be none, part of a councils tenancy agreements the house should be their primary residence. Or do you mean people who are buying the houses (shared owners) who are letting the properties out?

Due to the freedom of information act you can send a written request to the council asking for this information. They have something like 2 weeks to get this back to you, but you have to pay an admin fee.

Ahhhh I get you now, you mean with council tax bandings, give the recovery / council tax department a call and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Do you have a valid reason for wanting to know, or is it just to complain about how these rich people are buying up the properties and forcing locals out of the local housing market?
Under the freedom of information act, you can legitimately request this info, and the council will be obligated to attempt to provide it, but you may have to pay the statutory amount to commence the search. Ring the council concerned, and ask to be passed to their freedom of information department. They can advise from there.

It's Barrow council.

No I want to look into it as research for putting in a possible planning permission for holiday homes on some land I have.
I know local housing stock is being taken as holiday homes, within ten houses from where my parents live in a small village is a house bought by a doctor from derbyshire and another a london stockbroker(Barrow is in cumbria).
So I'd like to know how many others there are.

I work for a local council and just be aware that you can't make any old request under FOI regulations and expect the council to find out if its not easily available.

Some FOI requests can be quoted thousands of pounds.

Your best bet would be to request the info from the council tax dept, thats the only data that i can think would include ownership, and even then i doubt it'll have what you're looking for.
