Hi,

At the moment at home I have the following:

Downstairs : ADSL router which is only 10/100 to my HTPC / download machine.

upstiars via a cat5 cable to my gb switch which networks my other 2 machines.

Was wondering any point putting another gb switch downstairs so when i transfer data from HTPC to my main machine it would be a lot quicker ? I do transfer quite a bit of data....

This is a really random thread in that only you can provide the answer.

Is the transfer speed a problem or not? If it is then buy a faster switch :p

a mate of mine had the exact same issue and bought the gigabit switch only to be dissapointed that the speed only went up to about 21MB/s.

21MB/sec is not to be sniffed at!

Yeah if you expect it to literally be 10 times faster then you will be disappointed. Realistically you're looking at 3 to 4 times faster - mine is around 25 to 30MB/sec compared to 8MB sec or so on 100mbit. Still pretty good I reckon.

I was thinking bout buying one to sit between my cisco 2610s. Since my machines have a onboard GB lan. Only to test it out though.

I think you'll hit the limit of the PCI bus and then your hard disk before getting anywhere near to 1gbit speeds. :o

My home LAN is faster than 100Mbit for transfers - especially when more than one machine is running.

I'd agree with the other posts the domestic PC isn't designed to handle gigabit network.
