I know i must have a screw loose but is there really any point in me changing my motherboard and cpu from i7 860 to i7 930/950?

Main reason behind it was ive managed to score a 6gb kit of ram :) and i fancy the rampage iii gene over my maximus iii gene for the eax 5.0 of the onboard sound plus the sata3 and usb3 add a bit of future proof into it, i was hoping to get around 400 ish for the maximus iii gene, i7 860 and 8gb of patriot sector 5 cas 8 ram, which is about the cost of a 950 and rampage iii, so basically its not going to be much of a cost to change but would i really see any benefit for the hassle?

Not quite sure if i should have put this in the cpu or mobo section as id be replacing both......

Not really.
Especially not with SandyBridge supposedly just round the corner.

If many uses are gaming and editing there isnt much in it anyway

Am I right in thinking the main difference between cpu's on socket 1156 and those on 1366 is the QPI throughput? (throughput the right word?) So 4.8Gt/s for an i7 950 on s1366 and 2.5Gt/s on 1156...? Would that make any difference in overall performance? I think not. Also going from 8gig ram on dual channel to 6gig on triple channel, seems a bit 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other in terms of performance. A lot of outlay for not even a guaranteed tiny step up in performance. Ebay the ram you just got and stick with the system you have...

I'm not posting my current pc specs, you'd all laugh, a lot!

Oh alright then, but one time only!! - because I've just upgraded (almost) the whole lot and waiting for delivery to start assembling...

Athlon XP 3000+
Asus A7n8x-x
2 gig ram single channel (!!) pc3200 - 400mhz (Corsair I think)
Sapphire HD3850 AGP
120 gb Seagate Barracuda UDMA100
Creative Audigy2 pci
GlobalWin Saf Onyx 450 watt power supply
Windows 7 32 bit (running fine - but it resents me, I know)

Awaiting:

Intel core i7 950
Haven't bought the cpu cooler yet, either a Corsair H50-1 or a Megahalems monster..deciding on Friday.
Gigabyte x58a UD3R rev 2
Patriot Viper 6gb DDR3 cas8 1600mhz
Sapphire HD5770 Vapour-x
Onboard sound for the moment because of budget..
Seasonic X650 power supply
Fractal Design Define R3 case.

I would strongly suggest against this tbh. There will be no performance increase and a lot of money spent.

If you want better sound, then picking up a dedicated sound card is the best bet. You can get something lovely like this for £57 and it is much better than the best onboard sound.

If you want SATA 6G/USB3 - pick up a card like this, however only do that when you are actually going to use a device that makes use of it.

Slight hijack - but EdinKent - you could always keep your Audigy2 :). I was sorry my audigy 2 ZS had to go when building my current rig, then literally on that day creative released win7 64 bit drivers, so I kept it :)

Oh forgot to say - also have an OCZ Vertex 2E 60gb - birthday present from my nearest and dearest..

Yep not throwing the sound card away, it'll run fine on this system with 64 bit Win 7 installed.

And no, I didn't mean to hijack this thread either :), its just that in comparison I think my upgrade will yield an enormous boost in performance, rather than the tiny step Bradmax is contemplating. Sorry, that was sort of the point I was trying to make.

If its only a few pounds in it then do it, if its hundreds dont bother as u wont see a huge benefit and you may as well save that money for what is coming out next year...
