Hi,

My parents are after buying my lad a tablet, mainly for watching video's with it strapped to the headrest in the car for journeys to stop him getting bored.

Opinions please if there is anything better than it sub £300

Must have micro sd slot as that's where I will be putting all his films. or I would have been looking at the new nexus 7" (I really have no idea why any tablet does not have expandable memory these days)
Needs to be 7" or 8" in size.

The main reason for the tab being in number one position so far is that me and the missus have galaxy s3 and s4 phones so both have in car chargers and also know our way round the tablet as he is really still to young to use it, so really it's only going to be used for in car entertainment. Looked at the tab3 7" version but the screen rez looks a bit low from the spec sheet.

Cheers:D

My father in law just bought a Tesco Hudl. I set it up for him on saturday and its quite nice. Perfectly suitable for youngster. It has micro SD. I think you can use your clubcard points to further reduce the price. For £100 I thought it was pretty good.

I don't know what Samsung were doing when they were deciding on the Tab3 series specs. They are really not much better than the Tab2. The Nexus 7 2013 is really improved over the previous model, yet Samsung look like they didn't even bother with the Tab3. Perhaps they are more reliant on their brand name and the SD card slot to sell their mediocre offerings.

Tab3 8" can be had for £180, which isn't too bad I suppose. The launch price of around £250-£280 was a complete joke, but really it's a pointless tablet in my opinion. Nexus 7 2013 is far better for similar money, and those who want a SD card slot will probably get better performance from a Asus Memo HD7 for £50 less.

I had also been looking at the asus memo hd as an option too.
It just baffles me in this day and age why all tablets don't have a micro sd slot.

Baffling, no. Annoying, certainly. Google want to sell online storage. Samsung, Asus and other brands make money on the hardware alone. They just can't compete with Google who can release cheaper good spec hardware, then make the money back with their online services. Even if a card slot was provided and the Nexus 7 cost a bit more, which I'm sure many would go for, it does not make financial sense for Google to do that. You can bet your boots if Samsung, Asus, Sony, whoever, had online storage to sell their tablets and phones would not have card slots.

How about the Tegra Note 7"? £180 from the purple shirt place, 720p screen, Tegra 4 SoC and a microSD slot. There's a £20 cashback offer as well, so £160 total.

Every review i've seen says that for the money the Nexus7 2013 is easily the best tablet.
It can currently be found for £179 for 16gb version once you take £20 off using the retailers online offer. (from the green and white logo supermarket)

Another vote for the hudl.Has a good screen, great for watching videos at home, not sure about in the car though but I guess that is an issue with all tablets

I picked up a Tab 3 8" today as a present as that's the one she liked the most after a visit to the shop in purple. Thank god for staff discounts means a got a nice samsung case for £6 after all added up. Spent the afternoon setting it up for her, then much to her annoyment I boxed it back up and wrapped it... haha

Purple shirt place got tegra note 7 for 100 quid. Just ordered mine. For that price it can't be beat. A15 cores got more future potential in them compared to krait

Saw this as well, that's a big discount from it's original price, makes the Tegra Note the best tablet at that price bracket.
