im wanting to stream mkv 720p/1080p stuff into the bedroom, not wanting internet or bbc iplayer or anything like that.

being a bedroom im not fussed about home cinema type stuff and just want mkvs streamed into that room using the tv speakers.

is there a cheaper way to stream than a 360 and WMC?

thanks.

Yeah, something dedicated would be better. I use a 360 in the bedroom and its fine for most things but there are quite a few files it can't recognise and play

what types?

ive been using my 360 to play everything so far and its played everything, it just cant handle subtitles unless they are hardcoded.

Does the 360 handle mkv natively nowadays? I had to use PS3 Media Server to watch them previously.

That did my head in so I went for a Viewsonic VMP74 and can't fault it. Plays pretty much anything I've thrown at it (save for poor encodes), supports loads of audio types and native subtitle support. Nice and cheap as well.

I would never use my 360 to stream media thyey have too bad a history of failing so I don't use it for anything other than playing games. :)

I have 2 network media tanks in this house.

In the living room we have a PlayOn! HD with a 500 GB HD in it
In the bedroom we have a Popcorn Hour A-110 with a 250 GB drive in it

Both play MKV files without issue and both were a lot cheaper to buy then a replacement 360 :)

That being said both of our HDTV's have media playing features built in and both will also play MKV without issue.
