Anything better than this?

I am in exactly the same boat as you...

From my research over the last week nothing comes close to the G750JH in terms of an all round package.

However, you can get a 17" laptop with same CPU but with a significantly better GPU (GTX 970M) for £1027 from a well know PC specialist but will have to live with the following spec reductions:

8Gb RAM instead of 16GB
No SSD
DVD rather than Blu Ray
750Gb HDD instead of 1TB (no biggie)
No OS (viable if you already have a legit copy of WIN7 or WIN8)

The GTX 970 looks to be around 40% quicker than the GTX 780M in gaming benchmarks.

If you are focussed on gaming and can live with no SSD then the above with a GTX 970looks a better bet. The gaming benefits of a better GPU would easily outweigh the relatively small gaming benefits from an SSD and 16Gb of RAM. You can easily add an SSD and increase RAM on the above laptop sometime in the future.

I am personnaly erring to towards the GTX 970 laptop rather than the G750JH.

Gonna seriously recommend you reconsider that purchase. Gaming mobile GPUS have improved massively in the last few months. Why not save a bit more and get a GTX970m notebook? Will be much much better and last longer than the old 780m

I can definitely agree with this post, I have the laptop with 860m 4gb and it is superb!! runs all the latest games max settings at a steady 60+fps

It is super light and portable unlike most 17.3inch laptops, The screen quality fantastic also.

The 780m is 'old' tech but it is still a very strong performer - virtually identical in performance to the brand new GTX 965M ie 40 fps in Battlefield 4 1080p Ultra settings.

The G750JH looks to be a fantastic value for money laptop combing a good CPU, great GPU, large SSD + 1Tb HDD, 16gb RAM, BR and a good 17 " screen...ie a good all round package for £960.

However for circa £75 extra you can get a laptop with the far superior GTX 970m card - albeit you have to lose the SSD, 16Gb RAM and provide your own OS.

Being super light and portable might not be a high priority for the OP.

Also stating that the 860m runs all latest games at steady 60+ fps is somewhat misleading...check this out to see a more accurate performance picture:

The G750 is a very well built machine, Far better than the G751. It's a nice machine for £960 and is also very quiet. You get a nice all round package.

I was using a G751 with 980m before it died and now I'm using my G750 with 880m which is a rebranded 780m and I'm still getting a decent gaming experience at 1080p with nothing really making it struggle.

For under £1k the 750 is a great machine if you are after a nice all round decent system that is also very quiet.

in my dreams

I wish i had a grand to spend but being at uni.Well you know. The best i could do with help from student disability allowance was get an acer 13.3 in screen and i5 2 core cpu but it did allow for features to upgrade the ram to 16gb at 1600mhz and it does come with a 128gb ssd however im gone upgrade that and the stock ram as it is only for work so not much gaming but that why i got a gaming rig lol.:p:D
