Anything else I need to change overclocking my i7 920 D0?

I resently built my new i7 920 and overclocked it to 3GHZ on my GA-EX58-UD4P with the Akasa Nero CPU Cooler. I am perfectly happy running it at 3GHZ and dont want to take it any further. Prime95 has been running stable with In-Place Large for 5hrs now.
All I have changed is the BLCK to 150, switched off Turbo Mode and set the CPU Vcore to normal everything else is set to auto but is there anything else I need to change? I have been reading round but Im not too sure.

Are you sure you dont want to push the chip faster? With a Noctua cooler you could go right upto 4.0 without any major extra tweaks, if you have a look at the many posts around. I had mine auto-overclocked to 3.6 as it was part of my new machine, but the settings allowed me to rake it upto 4.0, and then upto 4.2 with my case fans on the high setting

Yeah I’m sure, as I don’t want to run the CPU too far causing damage to anything or constant BSOD’s. Plus I want keep my temps low on load and at 3gig I am perfectly happy.

Im sure that you are, but surely you will be wanting extra speeds for nothing? You wont be reaching high temps or damaging the chip going towards the 4.0 region, should run perfectly happy at 4.0 with a D0 stepping, as the overclocks is what it was made for, most people have this running at 4.0 with no troubles or problems, so its worth it

Thats a fair point but now even at 3gig, my computer all of a sudden started shutting itself down after about 30secs. So I guess only changing those setting wasnt enough. Anyone have any ideas what I was doing wrong when overclocking?

It might have something to do with your CPU cooler. The best bet would be if you order a Noctua Cooler, as they give the best cooling and the best overclocking abilities without any problems. What case do you have as well?

What you mean you "Set the CPU vcore to normal"?

In the bios under MIT, there is an option to set the CPU Vcore from Auto to Normal. I read else where that this should be done to avoid any unexpected crashes.

I have an old gaming case which I brought years ago, has 1 fan at the side and 1 in the back.
Before the computer was randomly shutting down, the CPU temp was 73, i thought this was a safe temp to run at or am I wrong?

That temp sounds just about OK, but to be on the safe side buying a new case would be the answer that you need, and you cant really beat the cooling power of the Antec, and it looks very nice with the blue led's all over the place ;)

Dame, knew I should have spent the extra on different CPU cooler...lol:rolleyes:

The Titan Fenrir cooler is also rated very well for these chips - it's pretty cheap too and does almost as good a job as the Noctua for less ££'s - However, at high speed the fan is pretty loud from all the reviews, certainly louder than the Noctua!

set the vcore to 1.3 and the dram to 1.64

put your BCLK at 170-180 and put turbo mode on

then set your ram timings to what they should be

that will give you a nice clock that is easily achievable on what you currently have

dont switch from the Nero - it is more than good enough

i test the OCUK 4GHz bundles using one and it holds prime 95 at 4GHz on D0 chips no problem
