I have just got my lucky lil mits on a new computer and it came with a 7600GS 512mb (lol). Dont no why anyone would put that much memory on a 7600GS. This card at the mo boasts 4412 on 3dmark05. Anyway i was wondering if i could overclock this very well or get at least 6000 3d05 marks with it, i dont think this is possible though. I was hoping it would be similar to a 7600GT that does 6000 on 3dmark05.

My old X800Xt PE in my agp comp does 6500 on 3dmark05.

As this is the first computer i have had with PCI-E i am looking at a 7900gt as a upgrade.

Which card is better a 7900gt or X1800Xt?

Many thanks in advance!

josh

as its a pre-built system make sure the psu can handle high end gfx cards and make sure it has an 8pin pci-e plug on it.

as for the 7600GS check to see if it is the passively or actively cooled model. if active cooling is present get coolbits 2 and use the auto detect options to overclock it (easiest way). alternatively you could purchase an aftermarket cooler a volt mod the card. this will almost certainly garentee high clocks but will decrease the lifespam of the card.

enjoy.

Im gonna take the good bits outta my old system though, ill put my Hiper 580w in there soon and my X-Fi fatal1ty.

Not much difference between the x1800xt and 7900gt, but the 7900's are more expensive and are reported to have a higher than average failure rate.

This is weird, i just played BF2 with full settings, everything high with 4xAA and it ran awesome!!! Much better than my X800XT PE ever was, this is strange?

no not strange, its normal. the 7600gs has a more powerful core. although its memory bandwidth is less than that of the x800 the efficiency of the 7600 is far better than that of the x800 series.

Shame the audio is shocking without my x-fi in there. Think i may have to hang onto this card for a tad longer it seems.

x-fi make much difference to cpu usage? some people say it lowers cpu usage, others say it increases the cpu usage?

so not sure which is it?

I dont think i said that right, i mean BF2 is shocking audio wise without my X-Fi. I think ill have to keep my 7600GS a little longer.

I think it lowers the CPU-Usage, well i hope it does, the fatal1ty one should anyway, which is the one ive got. Ive got a Pentium D 940 atm. Is BF2 dual core optimized?

OTOH, they take less power and the stock cooler is quieter. Swings and roundabouts.

I have a 7900GT and it's good, but if you're planning on changing the cooler anyway, I'd go for an X1800XT.

Was that a typo or am I missing something? I thought PCI-E power connectors were all 6-pin.

Is the X-Fi really good then?

In a word...Yes. I didnt realise how much better it was until today since i just got a new computer and i couldnt be bothered to faff around with installing stuff so soon. It is extremely better! On onboard sound theres no depth of field and dynamic range of the sound.

This is strange, my X800Xt PE scores more on 3dmark05 but doesnt play better on BF2, so 3dmark isnt that important really.
