Hello,

I've not used my pc in a couple of days and not sure if I have done since windows did it's latest update, but anything I've tried to download, windows has recognised it as a virus and deleted the file. This is anything from .nzb files, to pictures off the BBC website, to the install file for firefox so I can't see if it's to do with explorer!

The same message pops up as attached:

I'm running windows vista and AVG free, I've tried turning off AVG link scanner etc but it doesn't appear to make any difference. I've made sure AVG is up to date and run a full scan and says the system is fine.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Paul

My apologies for the picture size, thought I'd made it just the one line :$

If you can get access to another PC, might be worth downloading a portable version of malwarebytes and running a scan while in safe mode. Could try running a scan with AVG in safe mode and see if it finds anything too

its most likely some type of malware / virus that is telling you this (as in there is
nothing wrong with these exes you are grabbing)

start in safe mode , and check the hklm/software/microsoft/run
and
hkcu/software/microsoft/run

to see is there is anything dodgy starting up with windows

Disabling all addons in Internet Explorer and restarting it might be enough for you to download files again. Thereafter you can install various malware removal software.

combofix from bleeping computers,
what ever kasperskys root kit removing is called (free download)
malwarebytes,

boot safe mode

run combofix, run the kaspersky one (not usually needed but a few times its found one combofix will not), last phase run malwarebytes.....

Many thanks for the suggestions chaps, used my wife's laptop to download the combofix, kasperskys and malwarebytes but doesn't seem to be working. Malwarebytes removed about 4 files but the same thing still happens, even happens in safe mode.

With combofix, despite having uninstalled AVG, it still said AVG scanner was running, ran combofix anyway and it didn't seem to like my computer. Ran all the scans (or most of them, said it couldn't run some as not logged in as administrator, but i only have one user account on this PC). Then when it reboots it just hung for ages with a blue command window not doing anything, no CPU usage, left it for an hour or so and still nothing happening.

I've not been all that au fait with computers since I gave up messing around with them back at uni, is it worth a windows re-install? Trying kapersky's virus removal tool but it's currently at 97% with no threats detected so running out of ideas.
Had a look at msconfig and there's nothing obvious to me that shouldn't be running...
