Hi guys, it's been about 2 or 3 years since i built a PC. But i have many years experience of putting maching together - just wanted to run this past you to see if i've missed anything!

Neighbour wants a new PC for his home office, has to be windows ultimate, but he won't be gaming just multi-tasking on the 'net (had over 30 different windows open last time i visited!)

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit - OEM (GLC-00736)
Asus P5QL/EPU Intel P43 (Socket 775) DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5400 LGA775 2.70GHz (800FSB) - Retail
2xKingston 2GB (1x2GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C5 667MHz Single Channel Memory Module
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (ST3250318AS)
Gainward GeForce 8400GS 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Asus TA-8G1 Midi Tower Case - Black/Silver
OcUK Swift 550W Silent Power Supply
OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Any input/recommendations welcome! :D

Just get a mobo with onboard gfx, itll be fine for his needs, also Id just go for the Corsair CX400 rather than the OcUK 550W, whats his total budget?
Also re case, I did a build for family last year and used that or a similar case but the front panel connectors were in a block rather than the usual individual fiddly ones and the block didnt match up with the mobo configuration, I was using an asus too so would have thought this would be fine, but it wasnt, just something to be aware of, in the end I binned the case (the cost to RMA was almost as much in postage as the case was worth) and went for the coolermaster elite 334/335 which was fine

Why windows ultimate? what doesnt Home Premium do?
If hes just doing multi tasking internet how about just using onboard gfx? and i would suggest if you can to get a Corsair CX400w as it will be more reliable than a Swift.

There didn't look to be 775 mobo's with onboard gfx so i went for the cheapest PCI-E.

His total budget is £500, but i've gotta build it so would like some pennies for my time :)

Windows Ultimate - he's been told to get it by someone who'll be writing a stock package for him.

If staying s775 its the G41/G31 boards with onboard gfx, but I think youll be able to squeeze in newer tech, definitely an AM3 system, maybe i3, I'll have a play for you now
Edit: maybe not, dint realise quite how much ultimate was, is it really necessary? really? thats using up a massive chunk of budget

As you can see, going AM3 alllows for a quad core cpu, that'd be my choice

Ultimate and it being as quick as possible online are his only spec's, from my previous experience with him he wants it quick (instock) and with plenty of ram (ie 4gig not 2)

I've looked at getting prebuilt but entry level Ultimate puts delivery times into next week aswell as being near budget (i know i'll be transferring data and installing stuff for several hours for him!)

I like the look of the AM3 as i'd really steer away from an ASRock board, even though i'd prefer an Intel, let me play with the Intel build some...

Thanks :)

Yeah there are other options but most the cheaper ones are out of stock atm, I do tend to try n stick to recomending asus or gigabyte tbh but the budgets very tight

Yeah i'm an Asus man myself, the Intel build with the Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H looks even unhealthier budget wise lol

My take on it. Screaming i5 just about doable which would spank an Athlon or Pentium Dual Core...

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit - OEM (GLC-00736) £153.98
Intel Core i5 650 3.20GHz (Clarkdale) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £135.11
Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMD4GX3M2A1600C9) £79.89
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2 Intel H55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £60.99
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £32.99
OcUK Apollo MicroATX Tower Case - Black (450W PSU) £26.99
OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £12.98
Sub Total : £502.95

Could always save a little by moving down to the fastest i3 which would loose only Turbo Boost.
