Hi folks,

This looks like the perfect setup but it is looking too good to be true. Do I need anything else to go with my axim 51v for a trip from the UK to Austria?

Western Europe Maps linky (includes tomtom software)
Memory Card (2 or 3Gb)
GPS receiver (looking at either a tomtom one (linky ) or the Holux 236 linky


Its my first time driving abroard so I'm trying to make it as painless as possible.

I'm a Tomtom fan, but I have to admit that for long journeys I much prefer paper maps. There is something a bit soulless about a road trip using satnav.
If the aim is to just get there, then it's great, but if you intend to enjoy the journey, the old paper method is better as you see interesting things to do and places to detour when you look at maps, that satnav will guide you straight past.

Agreed, is it business or pleasure?

Obviously if you're driving across in an artic or something you'll want to get there asap with as little hassle as possible.
 
TBH any receiver based on the sirfstar3 chipset will be amazing, i just got a new CF one and it even works indoors, i get a fix sitting in the middle of my living room on 3 sats :D With it tucked away in my dashboard its always fixed on 8-10 satellites, and thats with a very limited view of the sky.

As to the original question, nope thats everything you need. A memory card that big is overkill though.
 
He is going to austria Nathan, a 1gb card should suffice anyway though. I'd possibly get a 2GB though to be roomy.

Yup as per Jez as well, SirfStar III chipset, there are some with solar panel on the top to trickle charge them too.

I'd go for 2GB ish card as if you ever go to the USA the map for that is 1GB. 3GB could be overkill though depending on if you put mp3 on it etc.

In total it is, but it isnt one map its many seperate maps for each state, so you simply pick the States you'll be visiting.
 
Thanks for the feedback, we will be getting paper maps too, the tomtom is there for once we have the places we want to go, and so I can use the 'avoid motorway' function. It's also to save the gf from the stress of map reading and getting travel sick and because I've wanted it for a while and now have a good excuse (errm reason :D )

The 3 Gb :p came from adding up the size of all the maps and adding a gig of space to store photos on, rather than something I'd set my heart on. Will probably get a 2 Gb and a card reader sorted for my iriver so I can swap on the go.

Going for pleasure (in an MX5) for a holiday in the Tirol. Have a day and half to get to Dover (750 miles :eek: ) and then two and a half days to get to the hotel (another 750 miles direct) so the planned route will take in some pretty views and some fun mountain passes and tunnels.

if its an SD Card in that, then 4GB cards are "only" £50-odd. That way you could have some movies on there if you get bored, music etc and plenty of space for tomotom and everything you want.

Not as if £50 for 4GB is much more than a 2GB card, and you can never have too much space...
 
those prices are pretty reasonable. The site i had in mind lists the 4GB at 150speed, at £69 with free reader (USB2), so i'd remembered the pric wrong anyway, but OCUKs 2GB is pretty cheap there for reference, and if its classed as a competitor then i'll remove it, its http://www.mobymemory.com

I WOULD reccomend the ultra fast cards as finding Postcodes and addys and stuff with a slow card can be a real pain in the ;)
