I have a new Fractal Design Define XL with 1 extra FD fan for front hdd bay but to be honest i'm a bit unhappy about the noise coming from it and do want a quiet case.

My CPU cooler is a older Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu so i'm looking at getting rid of that first I only have a older S775 CPU (E8400) so as i say i'll change that first but if i'm still unhappy what would people suggest for a quieter case but it must host at least 8 HDD.

What's the rest of your system?

You're going to struggle to find something quieter than the Define XL. The R3 might be slightly quieter because of it's roof insulation as well, but there's going to be very little in it. Chances are you need to use quieter components in your system.

Bit of a weird one this one to be honest as i say it's a XL with all Fractal Design (FD) fans as it comes standard, I did add another FD fan to go in the front to cool all the hdd's, so that's 2x140mm at the front, 180mm on the top and the 120mm rear fan put it all together and it gave a horrible noise not so much loud but a heavy bass feel to it, so i took everything out of line except the CPU cooler a Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu, which was used with old fanmate2 on slowest settings, and closed it back up and to be honest i only knew it was on when the HDD LED was slashing so the case is well quiet enough it has to be some of the FD fans.

The system is a non O/C S775 E8400 with Asus EAH6450 passive video card, you can see sound is an issue for me not performance, as i say system was well quiet however everything was cooking, so i fired up both front 140mm fans to keep my hdd cool and it seems quiet still with the side off, so in the morning i'll bung the side on and see how the noise is however i have a sneaky feeling it's the 180mm that was causing the problem but i'll have to run some more test to see which one is causing all the trouble, so it's not a case issue as it's silent with just cpu cooler, once i have worked it out i'll post back to to put it to bed, I have looked at the site and only have a choice of 2 180mm so options are limted it would seem.

I have Define R2 purchased used without fans. Installed 2x120 Akasa AK-FN053 front & 1x Thermalright TY-140 bottom intake with 1x AK-FN053 rear exhaust and 2x TY-140 on NH-U12P cooler (custom shrouds to fit) ducted out top. All fans are PWM controlled from motherboard CPU socket and are about 850rpm below 50% CPU. In normal use the loudest thing is Corsair TX650 r2 PSU fan and very quiet hdd rumble.

Try to have more intake (filtered) then exhaust for positive pressure case. Keeps dust out. ;) Only reason I have 120mm rear exhaust fan is to keep air movement on motherboard.
