Wouldn't touch a maintenance app with a barge pole.

The terminal and a bit of common sense is all you need really :)

Open Terminal and type in..

Code:
sudo periodic daily

Enter your password, and OS X will run the clean up commands that it usually schedules for the early hours.

Additionally, you can just go to HD(+/ User) > Library > Cache and delete the files within the cache to clear things up.

...and finally, you can clear menu items from the Apple menu..

Makes more sense to do it from Onyx, which runs the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts and clears cahces etc.

No point doing it manually when you can do it from within one app.

I'd rather do it manually :p

Apps that have such a deep-rooted control scare me.

It is debatable if such utilities are necessary on OS X. As EVH has already said, the periodic command (it works with 'weekly' and 'monthly' as well) together with Disk Utility 'Repair Permissions' is just about the only maintenance needed.

MacJanitor, Main Menu and Onyx are fantastic little applications that assist in such tasks. However, if you want to splash the cash, Cocktail is the daddy. :)
