Im building a rig soon , ive come up with a spec, but im needing a power supply, im not sure what to get, also needing a good case, i have my eyes on the Lian Li PC-7 PLUS

The specs are:

AMD Opteron UP 144 (San Diego)
1GB GeiL Ram
ATI Radeon X1650 256MB GDDR3
300GB HDD

I also dont plan on overclocking, so will i still need a CPU cooler or will i be ok?

edit: also be a dvd drive in there too

Are you using a current mothorboard or getting a new one?

If you're getting a new one, why not get a core2duo? They seem to be all the rage at the moment.

I suggest you start a new thread entitled "Spec me a £600 Core2Duo System" and I bet you will get some good replies !

I prefer to have an AMD X2 3800+ or the Opteron, all i need is a PSU than can prob fit in a Lian Li PC-7 PLUS maybe

it is possible to get a £600 c2d but not for gaming, RAM CPU PSU mobo GFX all round £100-£200 doesnt leave much for dvd HDD and case

so AMD is fine, i'm currently on a 3500+ and it plays games max, so yours will be ace

psu's i'd recommend are anything from seasonic, probably around 450w/500w for what you need, also the corsair 520w would be a good choice, avoid hiper like the plague (according so some) personally i hate antec PSU's. Tagen are good.

hope that helps a little

actually, with similar specs to what you have originally you can get a c2d by going a very small amount over budget, and if it really has to be £600 on the dot then drop the lian-li, lian0li stealth drive cover and the seasonic psu and get the antec sonata II with included PSU, saves around £60

thought i'd be helpful unlike some of the other idiots moaning about why you arent picking C2D

hows that moaning ?
i wouldn't have classed that as 'moaning' more a bit of a 'why stick to AMD when it is the inferior product for the near-same amount of money, it's only due to what brands you prefer'

It's like people holding out for the PS3 saying it's going to be 100x times better than the 360, when the specs say it clearly won't be, but it's about the games you play on it not just the system. hmm...tangent.

Dude, it's not people being nasty...its just the point is core2duo beats the pants off AMD atm and price/performance ratio is sooo much better, especially seeing as you will be using your machine for gaming you of all people will be able to see the benefits of a core2duo system. It may be cheaper now but its much wiser to opt for a core2duo system. But if you still feel like you want AMD then go for it.

For a psu the corsair ones are hard to beat.

We have to make sure you know that you're wasting money. You can ignore us if you like but it has to be said and you have to be made aware that you could be getting something better for less.
In a market with two brands brand preference is foolish. Buy what's best, or you'll suffer for it.
This isn't nasty, this is good advice.
Im not really a fan of core2duo.
You'd rather have a slower cpu and pay more money for it? I mean if performance was on par with amd stuff fair enough, but it very much isn't at the moment.

Obviously where amd cpus do come into their own at the moment is in the budget sector, so if you're aiming for a cheap low end system its probably what you want.

This is coming from someone with no recent Intel systems at all, but if i were to buy a system tomorrow i would get a core2duo without hesitation unless i was on a tight budget.
I also dont plan on overclocking, so will i still need a CPU cooler or will i be ok?
So why are you buying an opteron?

And why are you buying a platform that's obselete?
As far as i know the 144 is 939 only. 939 processors are already getting scarce (annoyingly).
