Gonna be buying my first car shortly. Mainly looking at 1.6l Vauxhall Astras, about 3-5 years old. Budget about 3-5k.

Anything wrong with that idea? Any known problems?

Edit: this is one I was looking at:

If it's your first car i'd spend a bit less. That shape has been around since 1999, maybe look at getting an older cheaper one?

The astra is a better bet than a corsa or another really small car, but its still fairly average. The focus is generally regarded as being better.

The Astra is fairly solid and ok to drive. As mentioned the Focus is usually regarded as being better but it all comes down to personal preference. I test drove both and in the end I prefered the Astra on the whole.
Might be worth looking at the 1.8 aswell as the 1.6. It's got a bit more poke but the difference in mpg and insurance is very little.
That one your looking at seems ok but I wouldnt spend that on it. I'd go for a slightly older one and pocket the extra cash. For example mine is a 2000 'w' 3 door and the same spec with only 43,000 miles on it and i'd only get around 2.5k for it. Also that ad states that car has ABS but I'm not convinced it does. Iirc, the ABS models are 5 stud fitment not 4 stud as shown in the pics.

They are reliable cars which will likely serve you well, but £4000 seems like an utterly ridiculous amount to spend on one, they are bland souless horrible little cars which were bought by lease companies in their tens of thousands, driven as such and then thrown through auctions at a rate of hundreds per day round the country when they came off lease.

Good enough cars on the face of it, but dont spend much on one. You will tire of it within a week and laugh about it as soon as you drive anything better. Buy a cheap first car until such time as you can afford to insure a proper one.

lol! OK guys, thanks for the info! Maybe will look at a slightly older cheaper one then.

Any other cars I should be looking at in my price range? (apart from mondeos of course :p)
