Anything wrong with this job application?

Goodness me. The second round of applications you posted were truly shocking. I am still bemused as to how 'Zip' thought the one giant sentence application was OK?

Not Application wise ok, but Asking to see if and when there will be vacances.

It could have a few extra commas and a full stop or 2 though

Employ him Spie, he must be some kind of genius, he seems to have built his first PC when he was about 6 years old.

Impressive..... ;)

Was just wondering, when you write a formal email to someone, would you finish it with "yours faithfully/yours sincerely"?

I just wondered whether the rules of letter writing applied to emails as well.

I've tried to apply the same rules to e-mails as I do to letters. Alas, I'm crap @ writing letters..... :o :D

This is one of the better e-mail applications I receive almost daily and is quoted word for word with the exception of the personal data in square brackets. Can anyone work out why this person is unlikely to even get an interview?

OK, "hiya" is a bit of a stupid way to apply for a job, and his grammar and so on isn't perfect, but what he actually writes seems quite good and he comes across as an OK guy. Totally depends on what jobs he's applying for. If the job's fairly simple and he's not gonna be writing anything non-employees will see, it doesn't seem that bad really.

As with a letter

Dear Sirs, finish with "Yours faithfully"

Dear Mr Smith, finish with "Yours sincerely"

It's quite simple :)

I've read a few of the applications for 'potential' employees of my Uncles business. I cannot believe how little effort some people put in. Like a few people said above, if they have problems writing the covering letter, then get someone to read over it.

At University I have a close friend who is Greek. He sometimes struggles to get himself across in a way that would reflect well upon him. All it takes is a friend like myself or similar to skim through, spot the mistakes and highlight them.

Unfortunately its not just job applications in this sector, we have had exactly the same kind of response within web design/programming positions. The quality of applicants has been abysmal and there covering letters equally so, just totally shocking sometimes. It’s just the youth of today there is no professionalism and standard there at all, people just don’t seem to want jobs, and I mean really want jobs. Its just seems like a quick letter to a friend with no real thought or effort gone into it.

Finding good quality staff is not easy, if I owned my own company I would be reluctant to recruit because of it.

Rofl..so the previous attempt by Spie to thin out the numbers here by exposing the invisible lurkers failed.

He seems to have hit upon a winner this time :D

Spie.. heres where your going wrong

[email protected] needs to be changed to [email protected] (i did this where i work, wouldnt believe the number that fell into the undelivered mailbox)

or [email protected]

:D

edit: folks can rant about about mocking CVs.. at least you have take the time to read it, people need to learn to proof read before clicking send, moreso if its something important like a job application

I wish I could post some of the CVs my father has received. One of the covering letters started with “Look no further your search is over……” this for a position paying over £50k

but I thought this sort of coke-induced arrogance and confidence was what you were looking at at the executive end of the spectrum...

(note to self- stick to black coffee when preparing covering letters....)

The only bad english teachers I have come accross are the ones unable to control a class of children, other than that they all seem perfectly capable at their subject.

Spie, as a side note, I always thought correct pronunciation as far as an "i" and an "e" together were concerned was that the second letter is the one that is pronounced?

Last little silly paragraph, grammar really IS going to pot these days. I'm 18 and am quite capable of writing a good application letter, and yet even I have others check it over. It always pays to ensure perfection in the application stage, it makes you look great to the employer :D

Oh nuts, I was thinking in German again. My mistake :P

That'll teach ya, you young whippersnapper!

Edit: For some reason I think you're younger than me, but I may just be making that up in my head...
