AMD 3800+ AM2 Socket (single core) @ 2.8 ghz (Zalman butterfly)
ASUS MSN32 SLI DELUXE
Corsair pc6400 DDR2
HIS x1900XT (stock)
Creative Audigy 2
Tagan 580w modular
250gb sata2 HD (not sure which, think WD)
Antec Lanboy

Well, I'm regretting not waiting 2 months for conroe immensely.

The budget is currently undecided, but probably less than 400.

I'm currently using this system for Gaming (cs:source), HEAVY video editing/rendering (after effects, 3ds max, maya), video storage, internet use and media capabilities.

In my opinion, here are my options.

1) Upgrade HD only, and wait for next gen am2 chips.
2) Upgrade to a dual core am2 chip, and upgrade the hd
3) Give the motherboard, processor, processor fan, to my nearest and dearest (family). Buy a conroe motherboard, conroe cpu fan, and an e6300/6400, and clock the hell out of it.

I'm currently liking option 3, any idea how much this would cost? if its worth waiting for am2? I know for sure my family won't use all the features of my motherboard.

And they'd have to shell out for all of their extras that I'm not porting over.

The current performance in games is fine, it's the video editing, where I have around 3 programs open at once, where I'm really struggling

Well to get a 6300, a decent cooler(the Arctic Freezer 7 would do) and a DS3 would set you back around £300 plus getting 1gb of Ram to pass on to your family would be another £80 or so which means that is the option I'd probably go for and also a graphics card but a fairly basic model should do which would mean another £30-40.

On top of that they'd need a psu, case, and a better gfx than 30-40 quid (I have a brother).

CP-126-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-126-IN)
£114.99 £114.99
MB-061-GI Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI)
£91.99 £91.99

Subtotal £206.98
VAT £36.23
Total £243.21

Thats all you would need to upgrade to conroe, but if this is out of your range then just get a dual core AM2 they are very cheap atm which will improve your systems performance when video editing.
