Anyway out of this?

I had a job interview this morning. I parked directly outside the premises, read the little sign attached to the lampost that said i could have a maximum stay of 1 hour, pumped enough cash into the meter to cover an hours parking. The interview started a lot later than expected, so i had to come out again and put more money into the meter, therefore now going over the maximum stay of an hour. I removed the old ticket, and placed the new meter ticket in its place.

After the interview had finished, i found a ticket from a warden on the windscreen, it claimed that i had stayed beyond the allowed time. Fair enough, as i had. The thing that gets me is that there were roughly 10 bays on my side of the road, 3 of which were taken (including one by my car). If its a case where all bays were taken, then i wouldn't have made this thread as i'd see their point, others needed to park, i'd overstayed my allowed time, so i got fined, simple. But the fact that there were clearly other empty bays is whats getting me pi**ed. I just find it so anal its unbelivable, add to the fact i only put in enough money to cover my car for an additional 20 minutes.

Anyway, has anyone been in this situation before and managed to get out of paying as i find £50 a bit much just for going over the allotted time!?

I've had plenty of parking tickets in my years of driving, and the best bit of advice I can give is to promptly write a polite letter explaining the circumstances and include a cheque to cover the fine.
This shows that you're prepared to acknowledge that the ticket was given fairly, but there are other circumstances involved. Thats the best you can do and hopefully you'll be let off this time.

how much is the fine? was it a local authority run car park, or was the warden/note from a private company?

could always write to them, and just be honest and say you didnt think you would be over the time limit and that you were in a job interview so couldnt really move it etc.

honesty could get you everywhere, but it could also get you nowhere. for the cost of a stamp its worth a shot!

honesty seems the best option i suppose, not too sure my old story of my car breaking down would work this time seeing as i parked pretty snug near the curb. The fine was £50, doubling after 2 weeks. Got fined on a street courtesy of Islington council.

good thinking, i'll include the cheque as well robbiemc, just in case. A friend was just saying they were recently fined, sent the council a letter hoping to get out of it, the council waited for the 14 days to go over, then replied telling them their appeal had been rejected, the 14 days had expired and that the fine had now doubled.

thanks for your help btw

Islington can be pretty strict, but it's most certainly worth the effort. Good luck and let us know the outcome :)
