I want to be able to keep an eye on my downloads at home whilst at work. Is there an easy way of controlling newsgroup software for example over the internet?

Something like Virtual Desktop??

If you have XP Pro, just use the built- in virtual desktop application to do it. Enable it on your home PC, open the relevant ports on your router, then from work (Start)-> (Run) -> "MSTC /v:<ip>"

If you dont have WinXP Pro you could try UltraVNC its supports web based virtual desktops.

if secuity is any good at your work you won't be able to RDP or VNC out, your only option would be logmein as it's java based but again, if security is good that will be blocked.

I use tightVNC using the built in web browser. Its Java based and you can setup which ports you want it to use in the server control panel. I use the default 5800 but that works so no need to mess around.

The easiest is logmein but they all offer similar settings etc. logmein pro costs a bit but you can transfer files and things via the window etc.

Not much really, but I find them easier to use to be honest. logmein is web based and has the advantage of you not needing to know your IP. You just have a little programme running to tell the logmein main server what the IP of the pc is etc.

all flavours of VNC are about the same, I guess its down to some having extra features or security or just plain personal choice.

Also, IIRC remote desktop locks out the pc for other users on it, at least when I tried it it locked me out of the session when my mate was doing stuff on my pc.

VNC and logmein are interactive, so others can see what you are doing and control the mouse etc. Also you can set it up just that the remote viewer can only see the desktop, not use the mouse or keyboard etc.

Thats a bit simplified but its the gist of it. LogMeIn will be the easiest and fastest to set up. :)
