Anyway to make a "lite" version of XP Pro to run on a low spec machine?

NliteOS is your friend www.nliteos.com

Will let you strip out all the bloat from windows and lots of tweaks and more! its fantastic. Especialy coupled with Ryanvm Update Pack every post SP2 hotfix and patch there is and if you poak around on both thouse sites there is loads of other cool stuff you can find too.

Makeing an Nlite CD is the best thing you can do mate i make one for every comp i work on it just makes life so much simpler. you can also intergrate drivers and stuff.

Yeah, looks to have some cool features.

Just what I need from the looks of it! :D

Basically want to run a minimal XP Pro install on a celly 400/ 256 meg laptop.

Any advice appreciated. :)

I ran XP on a Celeron 400 with 256 meg when XP first came out, and it runs fine. You should try it without stripping anything out first, you'll probably be surprised.

I think XP will run 'ok' on that spec tbh.

What you wanting it to do? Just testing or summit?

You could always try turning off all the graphic enhancements too. It will run a lot smoother on a lower spec box. :)

By miles :D

Also if you can get another 256mb ram for the old beast it will be more than happy.

The only thing realy holding you back will be the harddisk speed. as the transfer rate will be lower than the equivalent(sp?) desktop system.

Just found out it has 384 meg ram too, so that should help a bit. :)

Are there like Nlite profiles other people have made you can download, like a 'gaming profile' or something you can import into nlite ?

Nlite is great. For my server, I managed to get the XP install size down from 2gb to under 700mb and it has hardly any services, which is ideal for a low spec machine.

Somthing elce i just remembered once you have the system installed open services.msc and have a poke around. Anything you dont like the sound of or dont think you need, just copy the name of the service in to clipboard and go to www.theeldergeek.com and paste the name into there search and a whole host of information about the service will be available to you. I.e. The Alerter service
