I give you a pound for it as it sounds like its been badly mistreated...
but on a serious note windows and Linux distro group tasks now so I can't see the issue, and having used the windows 7 task bar I find it a copy of the os x dock with the pin option.
I would say the os x dock is fugly but that can be changed.
