Hi all

I've been given a mates' PC to look at as it was crashing all the time.

I'd tried various things before I managed to get a spare stick of ram - that's what it was in the end!

I'd reset the cmos earlier and when I managed to get it all up and running, I noticed the CPU in My Computer properties was showing as 950mhz Sempron.

I looked on the net for details on Semprons as I'd never had one, and found it ran at a bus speed of 166 - the mobo had defaulted to 100 - so I set that and left all the rest at Auto.

It came up then as a Sempron 2200+ @ 1500Mhz.

My mate hasn't got a clue which model of Sempron is in it.

I was wondering if it was at the right speed now or if it is a higher spec than that. Is there a way to find out for sure, or is it a case of just upping the dividers bit by bit till it wont boot or something. If so whic one should I start off with?

Thanks for any advice....

Thanks for the suggestions...

I'd already tried cpuz and it was saying the same as 'My Computer' >properties...ie. just a Sempron 950mhz initially and now as a Semp 2200+....It doesn't actually say anywhere (that I can see at least...) what it's full capabilities are.... :(

The cool and quiet driver reduces the cpu speed by lowering the multiplier when under no / light load. It does so to lower power consumption. You need to place the cpu under some load, such as a game in windowed mode or even a lighter task. Then you should see the speed go to the correct value. I would leave all the bios settings on auto rather than trying to manually find out the settings. Though if do choose that route, cpu-z should be able to identify the cpu. I would leave cool and quiet on as it saves power and provides the full speed when it's needed.

But surely it comes up with some sort of model name during POST?
Actually no, I don't think it does, iirc with these old AMD CPUs the BIOS picks up the model name by matching it to a table.

OP: can you post CPU-Z CPU screen here?
