A friend of mine has been with AOL for his broadband for years. Since Monday, any time he tries to load up a webpage he gets redirected to an AOL error message saying something about how his account might be suspended due to being in arrears, call Member Services, if not in arrears then call Member Services to get the problem sorted.

Three days of back-and-forth with Member Services, and they've decided that an Openreach engineer needs to come out. The router is synced fine (well, fine for Stretton - about 1.3mbps downstream), green lights across the board. If I log into the router config page, it shows the line synced and signed into his account. I did log onto his account on the AOL site from my house, and there's no mention of arrears nor does it show an outstanding account balance. But still, if the router is synced and all the lights are green, does that not sound like an account problem at AOL's end?

If the router is in sync and has web access and is getting shunted to an AOL page then the problem certainly sounds like AOL and they have mis-diagnosed it.

Hammer AOL CS for a day or 2 and if no joy get the MAC code.

If AOL persist in sending out a BT engineer, I'd ask for an e-mail from AOL confirming he will not be liable to the charges which are sure to follow when no fault is found...

I agree, if he is being redirected by their server to an arrears page then it can only be at their end. It not like the router stores this stuff after all

This does sound like it's at their end and isn't a fault in the line since the redirect would be done by their servers, and they should by liable for any no fault found charges that would be charged by BTOR and to be honest if they continue to deny that it's a problem at their end then you should tell that friend to cut that cancer of an ISP out of their life and go elsewhere.

I didn't even know AOL still existed to be quite honest. :p

Yep, owned by Carphone Warehouse apparently.

Cheers for the input guys. If there are any charges for a wasted Openreach visit, I'll make damned sure that AOL pick up the tab.

Quick update - contractor was sent out, obviously didn't find anything wrong with the hardware beyond usual Stretton crapola, agreed with us that it's an account issue so the ball has been swatted back into AOL's half of the court. I wonder if my friend will get his promised call-back?
