not sure about 3D and everything, so basically, are 3D monitors any good on the whole, and does anyone know if the AOC E2352PHZ 23" 3D LED is ok?
will use it for games and possibly a few films, although 23" is probably a bit small.
how is the 3D side done on these, and does the graphics card need to be pretty good to make the most of it?

Don't know how much you have seen the AOC 3D monitor for but Overclockers are selling the LG D2342P 3D monitor with a free game for £167.99.

These "passive 3D" monitors only run at 30Hz per eye so it is cheating a little bit but from some of the reports/reviews i have seen it works quite well for some people plus you don't need any special glasses with battery's in them they will be like the ones you get at the cinema. Some games also don't work well in 3D but others do.

can get the AOC for £146, so a little bit cheaper. is it really that good? im debating whether to go 3D or just get a 27" monitor and go bigger.

If you are mainly planning to use the 3D mode to play games then personally I would spend the extra on an active 3D display.

I say this because the passive technology only shows each eye half the total resolution -so image detail is lost (in comparison, active 3D shows a full 1080p resolution image to each eye).

Also, with a HDMI 1.4 3D monitor like this you are limited by HDMI bandwidth - so it can only transmit a 1080p 3D image at 30Hz or a 720p 3D image at 60Hz. In comparison, an active 3D monitor using a dual-link DVI or Displayport connection can send a 1080p 3D image with the full refresh rate of 1080p.

As a result of these differences an active 3D display will look better in 3D games, though they do cost more.

That said, I would personally either buy a 120Hz monitor like this and use it in 2D mode - or get a nice IPS monitor with well controlled pixel overdrive (RTC).
