hi all, first time poster, long time lurker...

i have been trying to get onto adsl max with AOL, however my line can only support up to 1mbps, and i am on the GOLD package, i have phoned AOL to ask to be put on the platinum and my line upgraded to the ADSL MAX, but every time i have tried (tried about 7 times) i have been told this is not possible as my line can only support 1mbps, according to the bt broadband checker i can get 2.5mbps ADSL MAX, i have told AOL this but they seem adiment that the checker is wrong and i am stupid, i finnaly managed to nearly get one guy to put the order through manually for ADSL max, but he was giving me sum crap about i would be better off sticking with my current speed, after he put me on hold for 10 mins he finnaly gets back to me to say, that i cannot get ADSL MAX due to being too far away from the exchange, which i find it hard to believe.

MY line stats are the following. LOCAL/REMOTE attenuation. 59.5/31.5 SNR MARGIN 29.0.

so how can i get aol to put me on ADSL max if i can actually get it with my line stats?

according to the line checker -You are approximately 2.35km from the exchange (straight line distance).

also has any1 on AOL that could only get 1mbps been accepted for ADSL MAX from them, and if you have how?

thx for help.

PS.

one of the aol guys also told me allthough the checker says i can get aol at 2.5 mbps the lowest ADSL max can sync at is 2mb, and it wont sync at anything bellow that, so he said the second line support guys said there was no point in going through with it.

i tried to get a MAC code to migrate to another ISP, but this indian guy gave me this lecture about a load of crap, and said they would offer me AOL gold for 19:99, what he didnt say was.... it would also put me onto another 12month contract....... AOL SUCK BADLY :(

by the way, my attenuation may be due to my old modem, (BT VOYAGER 100) i dont get any line drop outs or CRC errors, or any other problems on the line at 1mb.

at 59db attenuation im not sure that you would get any higher but anyways....
AOL don't have a clue what they are on about, Get a different ISP :)
Agreed. It doesn't matter if you're on 0.5Mb and can't get 1Mb - there may not be a huge advantage to be gained from going to Max, but there shouldn't be anything preventing you.

With an SNR of nearly 30dB, you should be able to squeeze quite a bit more out of your line - even the BT checker (which is usually very pessimistic) says you'll get more.

Go elsewhere if they're not willing to bother.

You can't simply be moved onto another 12 month contract without accepting it.
AOL get a lot of stick - a lot of it unjust (considering they are one of the few ISP's who do not have any caps on their service).
The regulators come down hard on any company that tricks people into signing contracts and that is why companies won't do it.
I'm in no doubt you called AOL and I'm also in no doubt they tried to keep hold of you as a customer (it is in their best interest after all) so again it is no surprise they offered you a free upgrade to their Gold service.
However they would have made it clear in your conversation that this would mean a new 12 month contract if that was the case - if not then you would have complained.

Sorry for going a little off topic, however I get a little fed-up when I see companies like AOL, MS and the like being attacked for no other reason then it seems to be the fashion to do so.
If somebody wants to attack AOL's service or moan about MS Windows then fine - however throwing in illegal activities like signing people up to a 12 month contract without once telling them is something no large, self-respecting company would dare do.

Because the service is so crap you can't maintain a good download speed long enough to download excessively :p

No smoke without fire.

well i can tell you now, the words "12month contract" or anything similar where never ever mentioned in the conversation that i had with the guy. and i only found out about the new contract when i signed into aol today, it saying "welcome to AOL broadband blabla, inorder to continue you must accept the terms and conditions" scrolling down, it said by accepting u agree to enter another 12month contract, the thing is i was allready on broadband and all they did was reduce my monthly cost, and not change the service i was on.m

but back on topic- any1 have any ideas on how to get AOL to put me onto the ADSL MAX service?

just got the AOL beta helpline number, gunna give them a call and see if they can get me onto AOL MAX. if any1 wants it its-0800 376 4409

That is exactly the same situation that I am in.
What has also happened to me is that even though I couldn't take advantage of the recent speed upgrades (because my telephone line can't support 2 Mb), I am still on the Gold package paying £24.99 and despite trying to downgrade to the Silver package saving myself £7 a month, AOL say that they can't downgrade my package until my 12 month contract is up which is next month.

They will downgrade me to the Silver package then but probably tie me into another 12 month contract - thanks but no thanks.

I have now come to the conclusion that AOL are not going down the Max DSL route but are instead going for LLU http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/08/aol_llu_trial/

I know that the link is a few months old but I think this is why people find it impossible to get on to Max DSL

I have no idea when this LLU service is going to be launched or whether my exchange is going to be upgraded or not but I suspect that the exchange list will be 'cherry picked' for maximum profitability.

Actually I have been with AOL for over 5 years and have hardly ever had connection problems!
It is the customer service that is letting them down IMHO and is the reason why I intend migrating to another ISP assuming they will give me my MAC code

just got off the phone with aol beta, they told me to phone technical support.......

i give up :(
That is exactly what happened to me mate so I know how you feel :(

I have spent over an hour on the phone over the last couple of weeks and I am still none the wiser!

yea i noticed that some people where posting on the aol forum boards that they have been upgraded, but all seem to be on the platinum, and all seem to have been upgraded without them needing to contact aol to have it done, but me being on AOL gold it means i wont be getting upgraded for a while- and they refuse to put me on the platinum becuase they have not been informed about ADSL MAX.

They are using Max, and they've got customers on it already.
Oh I didn't know that!

Here is a copy of an official e-mail that I had sent to me a few days ago after I sent an e-mail direct to AOL UK as their Indian call centre is useless as they haven't even heard of Max DSL!

Dear Member,

Thanks for contacting AOL. It's our aim to help you get the best possible online experience, and you can get further assistance at any time from Live Help, and the dedicated Help Channel. In response to your earlier query I hope you find the following information useful.

AOL is rolling out the installation of it's own telecommunications equipment in a number of UK telephone exchanges. so we can deliver our broadband service directly to our customers, rather than relying on BT for the local telephone connection. This update will enable us to make significant improvements in 'time to market' for new services and products and allow us to better maintain quality of service for our Broadband members. By delivering the service directly to our customers we believe we can in the long term offer faster speeds, new products and a better service. Only some telephone exchanges will be selected for the upgrade. Members signed up to NTL cable broadband cannot be part of the LLU network, but they will continue to receive the same high-quality service. In some cases, depending on the number of members connected to a telephone exchange, it may not be financially viable for AOL to install it's own equipment. Although there will be a short interruption to your telephone service while the upgrade takes place, there will be no change to your telephone service once the upgrade is complete. You will not be able to make or receive telephone calls during this interruption. You will have received an email advising you of the date on which the network upgrade will take place. Once the upgrade has taken place, you will be able to connect via broadband and use your telephone service as normal. We are committed to ensure the upgrade takes place as smoothly as possible and with minimal disruption to you. We will notify you if there is any change to the date of the upgrade.

And that's about all for now. We hope this mail is of some use to you. If you require any further help, please feel free to visit our online support at AOL Keyword: Help. This offers full information on all aspects of your AOL account, with answers to the most frequently asked questions and links to other helpful resources.

Kind Regards,

AOL Member Services.

Now you know why I am confused

Yes I also tried to get upgraded to Platinum (even if it means getting tied into another 12 month contract as I wouldn't care as long as I get on Max DSL) but was informed that my line won't take 2 Mb using 'normal' DSL but according to the BT checker I may be able to get 3 Mb or more using Max DSL so we are getting nowhere :(

Presumably they'll shift users over to LLU as and when their exchange is enabled.
They are using Max, and AFAIK don't have many (if any) exchanges LLUed yet.
