This is a piddling one.

Mate asked me to sort him out with his AOL suddenly being a bugger on him.

I went over and the basics are that when he starts AOL, it cannot find the modem?

( BT Voyager 105 )

Now, I di d a bit of piddling about and I have done a semi-cure in that I have now given him a dial-up icon on the screen and Windows itself does the dialing and then he can simply launch AOL and AOL works that way just fine.

Aol itself however, just will not dial out because it does not know the DIALUP MODEM ( This is Broadband now - not dialup dial up, but Broadband dialup, just in case you are wondering ) is there at all???

Anyway, I assumed that this was fine for him, but earlier on, he got back to me and said that he cannot hack it anymore and can I come over to sort it out properly???

The thing is that I then said to him, that the best thing he can do, is simply buy a Router... That way he wont have to do the dial up thingy, he will only need to run AOL and he will be in!!!

He wont do that though? And I see his point.. Why should he?

Now, he has since I first went over, got in touch with AOL and they gave him a CD... It was a wrong CD and they then sent him another, that too was the wrong one??? - I have not seen them, but I am assuming that the CD they sent him could be a router C Dwhen he needed a Dialer one, or perhaps a Mac one, I dont know yet?

The thing is that this guy lives 28 miles away so I want to go ther ea bit armed with ideas beause Im just going to tell him to get a router and shut up, or leave me alone.

If the modem works, then just make a manual connection and don't use the AOL software, as you don't have to use it anyway.

Instructions here of how to do it from when i was on AOL. :)

Sorry mate, but thats what I have already done... As I mentioned in the question.

Thansk for the info though.

The thing is, that this guy wants to use the AOL software?? ( Give me strength! )

Its kind of a losing battle for me on that one.

He wants me to have it so he clicks on the AOL icon and he gets on to AOL.

Hell, I have his dialer in the startup, and it comes up for like 3 seconds during start up, and all he has to do is click on AOL and he is online... As close to a router as you can get I recon, but he is not happy???

He still thinks that he is not using AOL and will get billed... I keep explaining, but sometimes if things dont work exactly as they have done previously, then these idiots are just not happy with anything.

Yeah sorry about that, i was confusing it with something else, anyway, if he won't be told theres no need for the software, and he insists he has to use it, then theres nothing you can do, tell him you can't help, he'll just have to sort it out with AOL, or try above posters suggestions first. :p
