I am about to install a rourer for a client that uses AOL. AOL wont provide a router for them so they have asked me to do so.

The router I'm using is one I have installed on over 100 ocassions without fail, but I have never used AOL.

Now the question is to use PPPoE or the PPPoA

From what I can gather I will use the following

Connection : PPPoE
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
Authentication: CHAP

IP Address : Automatic
Subnet Mask : Automatic
Default Gateway :Automatic
Domain Name Server (DNS) Addresses:Automatic

MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit): 1400 or 1450

Next step is the username, do I use just the clients screen-name or does it require the @dialbb.com on the end?

Can anyone here with a non-aol provided router confirm or correct these settings.

Cheers

It'll be PPPoA surely?

I recently isntalled a speedtouch, it did require the @dialbb.com for the username and whatever password.

Routers username/password are different to the screename/password you sign on with, you have to get the Routers ones from AOL.

Why wont they supply a router, they should do.

im with AOL and im using a bt voyager2110, these are the settings in the router

PVC Name pppoa_0_38_1
VPI/VCI 0/38
Category UBR
Protocol PPPoAVC/MUX
NAT on
QoS on

MTU 1400

automatic dns
IP Address : Automatic
Subnet Mask : Automatic
Default Gateway :Automatic
not sure about authentication?

for the password to connect the router i always use [email protected]

Will only supply a router if they have been with AOL for less thant 18 months. I found that to be realy realy strange.

Cheers for all replies. Will try it all tommorrow and let you all now how I get on.

That is strange, you would think they'd give out routers to their loyal customers who have been with them a while if they wanted them.

Thats what I thought as well.

for the price they pay i'd just sat to them go to cpw & get their line & bb package for the same cost, also the TT servers use the [email protected]

The router uses PPPoE and the username is to be tel num @aol.com

I suggestested that they move to BT or something similar but they have family in the US who use AOL and they are under the impession that they must stick with AOL to be able to communicate with them!!

Anyhow all working fine.
